Education Coordinator and Advisor
MSU Denver’s TRIO Upward Bound program serves first-generation, under-resourced college-bound students by generating the skills and motivation necessary to complete high school and to enter and succeed in a program of post-secondary education. This position reports to the Director and is funded through a federal grant.
About the role
The Education Coordinator and Advisor supports the planning, development, implementation, and delivery of program instruction and services related to the individual academic development needs, as well as building skill mastery for all TRIO High School Upward Bound participants. The position provides educational and college preparatory services to assist high school students by developing curriculum and delivering supplemental instruction, including seminars around study skills, SAT test-taking strategies, and other college readiness subjects. Additionally, the role serves as an advisor for a cohort of high school participants, coordinates recruitment, acts as a community liaison to support service learning, supervises University student staff, and contributes to data collection and evaluation of program services.
Responsibilities
- Program Development and Instructional Support (35%)
- Assess high school student needs and develop supplemental instruction for after-school programming to support student success.
- Manage and oversee educational and enrichment programming for the academic year component, including seminars on skills-building and college prep activities.
- Provide instruction during after-school programs in core academic areas.
- Identify service-learning opportunities for participants and coordinate engagement.
- Develop Summer Bridge seminars for recently graduated high school seniors.
- Create structures to align after-school and summer programming with program outcomes.
- Provide supervision during cultural programs, campus visits, and other off-site activities.
- Manage the program development component of the budget to ensure adequate funding distribution.
- Advising (25%)
- Provide academic and college counseling to a cohort of Upward Bound participants during both academic year and summer components.
- Conduct needs assessments of program participants.
- Support the implementation of Individual Education Plans each semester in cooperation with students, parents/guardians, school counselors, and high school instructors to ensure participants graduate high school in four years without remedial classes and are prepared for post-secondary education.
- School and Community Liaison (20%)
- Promote and sustain relationships with school counselors and teachers at target schools to support student success.
- Create connections with community-based and non-profit organizations to identify service-learning opportunities.
- Support recruitment efforts, including hosting informational sessions, conducting interviews, intake, orientation, attending recruiting events, and developing structures to report recruitment outcomes.
- University Student Staff Supervision (10%)
- Recruit, hire, manage compensation, and oversee training and orientation of University student staff serving as mentors during the summer program.
- Data Collection and Evaluation (5%)
- Administer, compile, and analyze Upward Bound and State assessment tests; review and evaluate high school grade and progress reports.
- Ensure all student data is uploaded regularly in the Student Access Database system and monitor participant involvement in program services.
- Support the development of an evaluation plan to determine program quality and outcomes.
- Conduct evaluations of program delivery and instructional classes.
- Other Duties (5%)

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, human services, social work, sociology, or a related field.
- Experience working with urban youth in a TRIO or similar pre-collegiate educational outreach program.
- Experience providing academic intervention and instructional support to youth.
- Experience providing program development and coordination support.
- Experience providing supervision to employees.
- Knowledge or experience working under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and confidentiality standards.

Preferred Qualifications
- Secondary Education Licensure.
- Experience tracking participant involvement with program services to support student persistence.
- Experience providing supervision to student employees.
- Experience designing lesson plans and curriculum to support academic success.
- Experience collaborating with high school counseling staff to address academic skills prescribed in Individual Educational Plans (IEP).
- Prior experience working in a grant-funded program in compliance with Federal rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of Colorado academic standards.
- Knowledge or understanding of Federal TRIO educational standards.
- Conversational Spanish speaking skills.
- Demonstrated commitment and experience working with underrepresented, ethnically diverse, and disadvantaged individuals.
Schedule
- Full-time, 40 hours per week, exempt.
- Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
- Evening and weekend work as needed.
- Hybrid schedule (on-campus and remote) available.
- Travel as needed.
This is a grant-funded position. Continuation of the role is contingent upon the renewal of the grant or the availability of additional funding. The grant runs on a 5-year cycle and is currently in its 5th year.
Pay
The anticipated salary range for this position is $47,300 - $52,000. The salary of the finalist(s) selected will be set based on internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training. The Enrollment and Student Affairs branch has committed to a living wage, ensuring no less than $47,300 will be offered.
