About the role

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Hunter Information & Training (HIT) Program seeks a dynamic and experienced educator to coordinate volunteer instructors to deliver certification courses in the Southeast Region. The HIT Program is a statewide program responsible for delivering firearms education certification courses (hunter, bowhunter, muzzleloader, and crossbow education), as well as workshops, clinics, and camps designed to recruit hunters and shooting sports enthusiasts. The HIT Program, with the assistance of over 500 volunteer instructors, offers quality training and education throughout Alaska.

The mission of the Division of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) is to conserve and enhance Alaska's wildlife and habitats and to provide for a wide range of public uses and benefits. One of the primary benefits provided to the public by the DWC is hunting and harvest opportunity.

Responsibilities

• Support volunteer instructors to deliver public hunter education, bowhunter education, muzzleloader education, and crossbow education courses.
• Recruit, train, coordinate, and evaluate instructors as well as assist the HIT Program Coordinator with the development of course materials.
• Provide teaching and administrative supplies to the volunteer instructors and maintain contact with certification course students.
• Act as the first line of public contact for inquiries regarding the various certification classes, clinics, and activities offered by the HIT Program.
• Assist with the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP), Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW), and other shooting sports clinics/classes.
• Occasionally teach certification classes.
• Work with an array of dedicated volunteer instructors and the general public (all ages) to promote safe and enjoyable hunting and shooting experiences.
• Travel within the state, including irregular work schedules such as evenings and weekends.

Working Environment

This position is based in the Douglas ADF&G regional office and will also spend a fair amount of time at the Juneau Hunter Education Shooting Complex. The Education Associate 2 will be in daily contact with the public, HIT Program volunteer instructors, and ADF&G regional staff. They will also be in regular contact with other HIT Program staff and will assist with providing hunter education at local schools and other Southeast communities.

Requirements

• Strong understanding of firearms and ammunition, firearms safety, and hunting practices and culture.
• Ability to establish, develop, and maintain effective working relationships with other agency staff, volunteers, and the community.
• Good planning and organizational skills, as well as strong public speaking and writing skills.
• Ability to multi-task effectively and coordinate multiple program components and support activities.
• Ability to work irregular schedules, including some weekends, evenings, and overnight stays.
• Valid driver's license.
• Must be able to legally carry and effectively use firearms.
• First Aid/CPR certification (training provided by the department at no cost if not already certified).
• NRA Range Safety Officer certification (within 6 months of hire).
• Must be physically capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited college, preferably in administration and/or education, AND one year of experience as an Education Associate 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
• OR five years of experience in the broad field of education, counseling, or administrative services, one year of which was at the technical/paraprofessional level.
• OR any combination of the above.

Substitution: In option 2, graduate study may be substituted for the required specialized experience on a year-for-year basis. Undergraduate study, preferably in administration and/or education, may also substitute for the generalized experience in option 2 on a year-for-year basis.
