Responsibilities

  • Provide instructional support and reinforcement to students in academic, behavioral, and functional areas across school, community, and vocational settings.
  • Implement curriculum and behavioral intervention strategies under the direction of a teacher and/or related services staff.
  • Assist with transfers, adaptive devices, tube feedings, diapering, bathroom assistance, and mobility training.
  • Consistently use proper hygiene practices as prescribed by MMSD health policies.
  • Maintain student confidentiality, including written records.
  • Assist with coordination and communication activities with other staff to provide feedback on student performance.
  • Assist with data collection activities, including reviewing and documenting student progress in academic and behavioral areas.
  • Monitor and implement positive behavior strategies, including physical restraint/management, safe space procedures, and behavior intervention plans.
  • Provide supervision during lunch, recess, playground, hallways, and field trips.
  • Participate in on-the-job training and district-level training.
  • Assist with loading and unloading school buses.
  • Tape record books and assist with preparation of instructional materials under a teacher’s direction.
  • Maintain records and a daily schedule with direction from the case manager.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree or 48 academic credits beyond high school, or pass an onsite assessment in lieu of college credits.
  • Department of Public Instruction Certification (License) to work with disabled children.
  • Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to improving one’s own cultural competence.
  • Ability to provide individual and small group instructional reinforcement.
  • Ability to work independently with students in school, community, vocational, and domestic situations under teacher direction.
  • Ability to keep accurate student data.
  • Ability to work with physically aggressive students and students who are nonverbal or have unintelligible speech.
  • Ability to follow teacher direction, written plans, Individual Education Programs (IEPs), and behavior intervention plans.
  • Effective communication skills with diverse students, staff, and community, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to walk, lift (up to 50 lbs.), climb, bend, reach, and kneel.
  • Basic computer skills (email, internet, word processing).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Prior experience working in a public school setting.
  • Prior experience working with children who have disabilities, including non-ambulatory and/or nonverbal children.
  • CPR certification and first aid training.
  • Experience using email, internet, and word processing programs.

  • Cultural responsiveness and commitment to anti-racist practices.
  • Manual dexterity for completing tasks and operating office equipment.

Starting compensation: $25.47 per hour.

Schedule

  • Work may require travel to different locations within the district and to off-site meetings.
  • Position may require working evenings, nights, and some weekends.
  • School-based positions are required to be in-person unless otherwise directed by the building principal.
  • Hybrid work flexibility may be available for certain positions, depending on the needs of the position and work unit.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, including spaces without air conditioning and areas with fluctuating temperatures.
  • Exposure to inclement weather and uncomfortable temperature conditions.
  • Ability to perform work while stationary for extended periods, as well as walking, sitting, stooping, or reaching.
  • Manual dexterity required for operating office equipment and completing general tasks.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to work under generally safe conditions with minimal risk of injury.
