About the role

Provides bilingual instructional assistance to children. Positions in this classification require the ability to speak, read, and write at the eighth grade level in one of the following languages: Armenian, Korean, Russian, or Spanish. Works under the close supervision of a teacher and, within a framework of established procedures, performs a variety of classroom bilingual instructional and support duties.

Responsibilities

  • Provides bilingual instructional assistance, at the direction of a teacher, to students of limited or not-English speaking ability.
  • Performs a variety of responsible instructional assistance tasks in accordance with instructions from a classroom teacher such as assisting students with written work, reading, math, and social studies.
  • Affords supervision groups of students at activity centers.
  • Assists in activities preparation, prepares bulletin board and other displays.
  • Responds to student questions and concerns.
  • Performs a variety of clerical tasks maintaining files and records, typing, preparing dittos, and operating various types of audio-visual and office equipment.
  • Affords assistance on class supervision on field trips.
  • Performs the less complex pullout instructional tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to speak, read, and write the required language.
  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Desirable: Written and oral proficiency in an additional language.

  • Ability to:
  • Speak, read, and write at the eighth grade level the language required by the particular program, or students, to which assigned.
  • Work within the framework and requirements of the instructional program to which assigned.
  • Operate office and audio-visual equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Compile and maintain records and files.
  • Knowledge of student's needs and behavioral characteristics.
  • English usage, grammar, and spelling.
  • Record keeping principles and procedures.
  • Classroom procedures and rules of conduct.

Benefits

  • Salary: The beginning and ending salary steps are shown on each examination announcement. Permanent employees with satisfactory service receive salary increases upon completion of their probationary period and at one-year intervals thereafter, up to the maximum rate.
  • Holidays: Regular classified employees are entitled to pay for authorized holidays, provided they were in a paid status during any portion of the working day immediately preceding or succeeding the holiday.
  • Sick Leave: One day of sick leave earned per month, accumulation is unlimited.
  • Retirement: All new employees who work half time or more must become members of the California Public Employees Retirement System and the Federal Social Security program. Contributions are withheld from salary. Employees may become eligible for retirement at age 50 with a minimum of five years service.

Pay

The listed salary rate represents the sixth and last steps of the salary range. Substitute employees are paid a fixed hourly rate at the sixth step only. For permanent positions, the examination process may include a multiple-choice written test and will include a qualifications appraisal interview. Candidates will be notified of the date(s), the actual examination part(s), and relative weight(s) at the appropriate time.

Schedule

Substitute employees are paid a fixed hourly rate at the sixth step only. Assignments may be in any part of the district boundaries (Glendale, La Crescenta or Montrose).
