Editor - Round Rock, Pflugerville & Hutto
About the Role
As an Editor for Community Impact, you'll bring your editorial judgment and newsroom experience to digital and print editions that directly serve the people around you. You'll set the standard for our reporters, shape coverage from concept to publication, and partner with our Design team to produce work that informs and delights in equal measure.
Community Impact News reaches two million mailboxes and thousands of inboxes each month. Readers enjoy it as much as they rely on it. If you've built a career in journalism and want to put your stamp on coverage that matters, become an Impacter today.
Responsibilities
You'll thrive in this role if you can own the entire editorial production process for a monthly newspaper edition with confidence and minimal hand-holding, drive a steady cadence of timely daily digital content, and mentor, coach, and elevate reporters.
- Mentor, coach, and elevate reporters — including helping early-career journalists grow into stronger writers and beat reporters.
- Provide trusted recommendations to the General Manager and Managing Editor on hiring, performance, and staffing decisions for reporters, freelancers, photographers, and interns.
- Generate sharp, original story ideas and champion them in planning meetings.
- Investigate, analyze, and interpret newsworthy events to produce reporting that's accurate, engaging, and locally meaningful.
- Bring a strong visual sensibility to graphics, sidebars, and story packaging.
Additional responsibilities include building and maintaining a network of news sources and community contacts, overseeing beat coverage, conducting interviews, and upholding Community Impact's editorial stylebook and AP style across all coverage.
Requirements
- College degree — preferably in journalism — or equivalent professional experience.
- At least 2 years of full-time experience with print or digital publication(s); candidates with a deeper track record in reporting and editing will be especially well-suited to the role.
- Demonstrated experience interviewing, writing, editing, guiding other writers, and managing a publication's production cycle.
- Ability to pass the company's writing and copy editing tests.
- First-rate reporting, writing, and editing skills, with a portfolio that reflects consistent quality.
- Proven proficiency across both hard news and feature writing.
- Expert knowledge of AP Style.
- Strong news judgment and a steady instinct for the stories your community actually cares about.
- Comfortable making editorial calls independently and standing behind them.
- Must have access to reliable transportation.
