NBME’s Test Development unit is seeking an Editor I to collaborate with volunteer subject-matter experts and stakeholders in creating and assembling test content that evaluates health professionals at various stages of education and practice. This hybrid role requires in-office work approximately 2–3 days per month. We welcome candidates located within 50 miles of our Philadelphia, PA (19104) office; onsite interviews and onboarding may be required.

Our mission is to advance the assessment of these professionals to ensure optimal care for all, fostering a diverse, compassionate, and highly effective health care workforce. Founded in 1915, NBME co-sponsors the United States Medical Licensing Examination® with the Federation of State Medical Boards and offers a full portfolio of assessment products for every stage of medical education. In 2024, we expanded into simulation through the acquisition of MedVR Education.

NBME invests in community collaborations, fee assistance, scholarships, and pathway programs to support medical educators, researchers, and learners, and to increase representation in health care. Responsibilities

  • Edit test questions for grammar, punctuation, clarity, style consistency, and content accuracy.
  • Review items for test flaws and guide subject-matter experts in best practices.
  • Co-facilitate multi-day test-development committee meetings, applying content and methodology expertise.
  • Capture committee edits in real time and maintain accurate records of decisions.
  • Assist in developing committee assignments and support experts in item-authoring and file-sharing software.
  • Assemble test forms and facilitate expert review.
  • Maintain test question banks, apply metadata in content-management systems, and coordinate routine expert reviews for currency, accuracy, and alignment with learner outcomes.
  • Produce and publish web-based examinations and ancillary materials, including practice/orientation content; perform quality control.
  • Participate in developing and maintaining examination schedules, project plans, style guides, and procedural documentation.
  • Provide instruction and feedback to editorial production and test-development support staff.

Deliverables

  • Manage annual test-development cycles, ensuring major deadlines are met.
  • Facilitate productive content reviews by subject-matter experts and accurately record editorial changes and decisions.
  • Ensure accuracy and quality of content and metadata in databases.
  • Assemble and produce high-quality examinations for web-based administration.
  • Follow established best practices and standard procedures.
  • Maintain test-question pools to support ongoing test-development needs.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, external stakeholders, and subject-matter experts.
  • Provide guidance and feedback to junior staff.
  • Engage in ongoing training and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Support NBME’s values.

Requirements

  • Excellent organizational skills and high attention to detail.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent grammar, punctuation, and spelling skills.
  • Proficiency with computer applications (databases, content-management systems, spreadsheets, word processors).
  • Ability to organize and budget time effectively.
  • Knowledge of standard test-development processes (desired but not required).
  • Knowledge of medical terminology (desired but not required).

One or more years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field.

Pay

$56,000–$60,000 per year. The offered rate typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, varying based on candidate qualifications, experience, department budget, and internal equity review.
