About the role

Arena Magazine is seeking an ambitious editor and manager to help jumpstart our digital business. As the Managing Editor & General Manager of Online, you will manage the entire cycle for online content, including finding and developing contributors, editing their work, and ensuring all content aligns with Arena’s storytelling standards. You will collaborate closely with the team on story selection and ideation, proactively creating original story ideas, and have the opportunity to write.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations for Arena Online’s content
  • Find, recruit, and develop a pipeline of contributors
  • Edit guest pieces and columnist submissions
  • Manage relationships with contributors and ensure content fits Arena’s editorial vision
  • Work with the team on story selection and ideation, creating original story concepts
  • Write clear, compelling prose for Arena Online
  • Engage with the audience in good faith
  • Consistently hit deadlines
  • Work independently and with the growth team to maximize reach and influence
  • Adapt to ambiguity; role scope may evolve to meet business needs
  • Assist with newsletters and email products as needed

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of writing experience (traditional outlets, business/investing, X/Twitter, or other platforms demonstrating ability to distill complex ideas)
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with clear, engaging prose
  • Ability to recruit and inspire contributors, building a network over time
  • Comfort with ambiguity and a startup environment; willingness to take on tasks outside the job description
  • Belief in Arena’s mission of telling The Great American Story of entrepreneurship, enterprise, and technology
  • Independent thinker who can quickly dive deep into diverse topics while remaining humble about knowledge gaps
  • Alignment with Arena’s ethos: judging information on its merits, rejecting legacy press gatekeeping, and valuing transparency
  • Strong preference for candidates based in Austin, TX, or willing to relocate
  • Availability to work hard and flexibly during most hours of the day

Qualities we value

  • You’re a fan of Arena’s content and vibe
  • Self-starter who initiates and completes stories without prompting
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Thrives in a startup environment; dislikes corporate bureaucracy
