About the role

Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Emergency Department Technician performs multi-skilled activities to support a decentralized, patient-centered approach to care and achieve desired outcomes. Responsibilities include measuring and documenting vital signs, identifying patient concerns, and reporting them to colleagues. The role also involves moving, turning, or relocating patients as required for their comfort and medical needs.

An effective Emergency Department Technician should demonstrate patience, empathy, and intuition, along with strong communication and organizational skills to interact with the Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse, and other care team members.

Responsibilities

  • Measure and document patient vital signs.
  • Identify patient concerns and report them to colleagues.
  • Assist with moving, turning, or relocating patients for comfort and medical requirements.
  • Perform multi-skilled activities to support patient-centered care.
  • Communicate effectively with care team members, including the Nurse Manager and Charge Nurse.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Ability to understand and implement detailed instructions for therapeutic procedures.
  • Ability to make accurate physical observations of patients.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Within three months of hire, must successfully complete online course modules, phlebotomy training, skills validation for basic and advanced skills, TACT training, and EKG training (80% passing rate required on each test in two attempts or will result in separation from employment).
  • Maintain MUSC Hazmat and TACT trainings.
  • Successful completion of Emergency Department Technician unit-specific training and competency demonstration within the first six months of employment (or will result in separation from employment).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required upon hire and must be maintained thereafter. Certification must be from the American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA-recognized equivalent) or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
  • Position may require working irregular hours, rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends under stressful conditions.
  • Positions within the Emergency Department require a copy of academic degree or transcript.

Hourly pay grade: Health-20

Schedule

Scheduled weekly hours: 12 (PRN position)
