Ecological Restoration Technician - I, (Shaw Nature Reserve)

About the Role

Ecological Restoration Technicians gain hands-on experience in native biodiversity management and ecological restoration across the 2,400 acres of Shaw Nature Reserve. This position develops and applies skills in invasive species control, native plant identification, seed collection, and operation of chainsaws, tractors, skid loaders, and other power equipment. Technicians work with volunteers, participate in the prescribed fire program, maintain site management records, and assist with various restoration activities.

Responsibilities

• Control invasive species using manual, mechanical, and/or chemical methods, including chainsaw operation.
• Participate in prairie, woodland, and glade restoration by collecting, cleaning, and sowing native seeds; maintain seed lists and databases.
• Assist in all aspects of the prescribed fire program, including fire break preparation, scouting, monitoring, and implementation.
• Operate skid loaders and tractors safely and effectively, following manufacturer guidelines and OSHA standards.
• Work directly with volunteers on ecological restoration projects.
• Maintain accurate data entry for management activity databases.
• Ensure adherence to safety standards and inform employees, students, and volunteers of safety guidelines.
• Report all accidents, injuries, and near-miss incidents immediately.
• Adhere to established policies and procedures, including the Employee Handbook and Garden Safety Guidelines.
• Foster a culture of teamwork, cooperation, and positive visitor relations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 1-3 years of relevant experience.
• Experience in invasive species control.
• Ability to learn and safely operate chainsaws, tractors, and other power equipment.
• Understanding of the ecological role of fire in natural areas and willingness to participate in prescribed fire operations.
• Experience using computers for data recording and management.
• Strong communication skills and comfort interacting with the public.
• Enthusiasm for Missouri natural areas and interest in learning native flora (preferred).
• Associate’s or B.S. degree in biology, ecology, botany, natural resources, or related fields (or equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience).
• Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written).
• Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, decimals).
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and problem-solving skills.
• Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.

Requirements

• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a background screening and motor vehicle report (MVR) for insurance underwriting.
• Pesticide Applicator License or ability to obtain one within 3 months of hiring.
• First Aid and CPR certifications or ability to obtain within 3 months of hiring.

Physical Demands

• Extensive outdoor work, including operation of power equipment and carrying loads up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to use a computer keyboard (typing).
• Tasks may require working at varying heights (e.g., step stools).
• Extensive standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching—75% or more of the workday is spent standing.

Work Environment

• Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all seasons, including temperatures over 100°F or below 0°F, rain, snow, and other inclement weather.
• Ability to work independently for extended periods in isolated settings.
• Willingness to work a variable schedule, including occasional weekends.
