ECMO Specialist

About the role

Under the direction of Respiratory Therapy management and the ECMO Specialist is responsible for all aspects of monitoring and troubleshooting the ECMO circuit and related equipment during treatment. The Specialist collaborates with bedside RNs, physicians, and other healthcare team members to coordinate care for complex ECMO patients.

Responsibilities

• Independently plans, delivers, and evaluates goal-focused, individualized safe age- and culture-specific care for all patients according to UNCH and department standards.
• Works with the bedside nurse to ensure the ECMO patient maintains adequate end-organ perfusion, acid-base balance, hemodynamic stability, oxygenation, and ventilation within ordered parameters.
• Coordinates comprehensive, age- and culture-specific continuum-of-care planning for patients and families, consulting with the healthcare team for complex planning.
• Develops, evaluates, and revises individualized, age- and culture-specific teaching plans for patients and families.
• Identifies problems and participates in finding solutions, following through to implementation.
• Communicates significant information clearly and efficiently across care levels and caregivers; collaborates with multidisciplinary team members and manages conflict resolution.
• Assumes responsibility for continuous learning, engaging in educational activities annually or pursuing advanced academic education, and is proactively involved in quality improvement.

Requirements

• Associate's degree from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program or Nursing.
• If a Respiratory Therapist: Licensed by the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board and registry-eligible by the National Board of Respiratory Care.
• If a Registered Nurse: Licensed to practice in North Carolina.
• Two years of experience as a Registered Nurse or Respiratory Therapist.
• Advanced knowledge of extracorporeal support principles and techniques.
• Exceptional critical thinking skills and ability to work under extreme pressure and stress.
• Ability to rotate shifts and/or work flexible hours to meet patient care needs.

Pay

$33.37 - $47.97 per hour (Hiring Range). Pay offers are determined by experience and internal equity.
