About the role
The GIS Technician will provide full-time support (40 hrs/wk) to the Vegetation Mapping and Wetland Delineation teams. Primary tasks include digitizing aerial imagery, creating maps and plant identification guides, identifying plant communities within the National Vegetation Classification system, and data entry. There is also potential to assist teams with field work if needed. This position is in-person, and preference will be given to those already residing in the state. The successful candidate must be able to relocate with a vehicle; relocation or housing costs or recommendations are not provided.
Responsibilities
- Digitizing aerial imagery
- Creating maps and plant identification guides
- Identifying plant communities within the National Vegetation Classification system
- Data entry and management
- Public outreach
- Preparing site forms, technical reports, compliance documents, and correspondence
- Spatial analysis
- Potential assistance with field work
Conditions of Employment
- Pre-employment criminal background check required for new hires
- Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one by the employment start date
- Legally authorized to work in the U.S. by the proposed start date; visa sponsorship is not provided
- Ability to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Installation Access Pass
- Possession of a Real ID or passport
Minimum Qualifications
- Pursuing a B.S. in a natural resources-, cultural resources-, ecosystem science-, or environmental compliance-related field (at least sophomore standing)
- At least 3 months and no more than 3 years of relevant experience, which may include internships, fieldwork, seasonal jobs, volunteer work, or applied coursework
- Basic field data collection skills (e.g., vegetation surveys, wildlife monitoring, GPS-based mapping; academic or field school experience would count)
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled or holder of a Graduate Degree in natural resources management, environmental science, geography, geographic information systems (GIS), history, anthropology, or computer science, or a related field
- Experience with Esri ArcGIS software
- Experience using Avenza or hand-held GPS for field data collection
- Experience managing spatial data in geodatabases or Microsoft Access databases
- Experience digitizing aerial imagery, creating maps, and plant identification guides
