EC Adapted Curriculum Teacher Assistant

Classified position on the CHCCS Salary Schedule (Grade 103), reporting to the Principal. 10-month, non-exempt role based at McDougle Middle School.

About the role

Assist the teacher in providing a well-organized, smoothly functioning class environment. Relieve the teacher of non-teaching functions to provide more time for preparations, individualization, and evaluation.

Responsibilities

• Assist the EC Teacher by working with individual students, small groups, or large groups of students.
• Reinforce the learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
• Devise special strategies based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
• Guide independent study, enrichment, or remedial activities set up and assigned by the teacher.
• Read to students, listen to students read, and participate in other forms of oral communication with students.
• Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
• Assist with data collection based on student IEP goals.
• Correct assignments and supervise testing and make-up work, as assigned by the teacher.
• Assist teachers with behavior management in a manner consistent with policies and expectations of the teacher and school.
• Keep the supervising teacher informed of any problem or special information about an individual student.
• Maintain professional relationships with staff and families.
• Maintain the confidentiality of information of all students and communicate with parents as advised by the EC Teacher.
• Supervise students as assigned or required—at breakfast or lunch, on bus duty, during class, emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
• Relieve the teacher for student conferences and emergencies on a short-term basis, as required.
• May accompany students to special classes.
• Serve as support for an EC Substitute Teacher as they interpret substitute plans and students' needs related to IEP/BIP goals.
• Perform classroom health procedures, when necessary, under the supervision of the school nurse.
• Assist students with toileting, feeding, and other personal care needs to support student health, safety, and daily functioning.
• Perform clerical duties as needed or assigned (e.g., check and record student attendance, collect and record money, update bulletin boards and classroom displays).
• Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom.
• Participate in in-service training programs, as assigned.
• Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of licensed teachers.
• Provide physical support and assistance to students with disabilities to ensure safety, access to instruction, and participation in school activities, including toileting and feeding assistance.
• High School-based EC TAs also serve as Job Coaches, supporting students with work-based learning experiences (school or community-based).
• Perform other tasks as assigned by the teacher or supervisor.

Requirements

• Must be designated as "Highly Qualified": 48 college credits or 7 credits in core subject matter and passing WorkKeys test scores.
• Previous experience working with students with disabilities is desirable.
• Complete district de-escalation and crisis training as assigned.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to perform basic operational functions: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, hearing, and repetitive motion.
• Ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds.
• Ability to safely and successfully perform essential job functions consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
• Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
