Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate daily earthwork activities including excavation, grading, trenching, pipe installation (water/sewer), backfill, and compaction.
- Read and interpret plans and specifications; verify grades, elevations, and layout using stakes, lasers, or GPS.
- Supervise and direct a crew of 3-7+ operators and laborers; assign tasks and ensure productivity and workmanship.
- Enforce safety standards, conduct daily hazard discussions, and ensure trench and equipment safety compliance.
- Coincordinate materials, trucking, and equipment to maintain workflow.
- Monitor production and adjust operations to meet schedule and budget goals.
- Track and approve crew timecards, equipment hours, and daily production progress reports.
- Provide daily progress updates and communicate issues or field changes to the Superintendent and/or PM.
- Ensure proper equipment care and report maintenance needs as needed.
- Travel to local and out-of-town projects as needed and perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum of five (5) years in underground utility construction, with prior supervisory experience
- Current OSHA 30-hour certification
- Can safely lift up to 60 pounds, climb ladders, stairs, and climb out of ditches
- Proficiency in operating heavy equipment (excavators, loaders) and reading technical drawings.
- Must wear proper protective equipment at all times
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to read grading plans, blueprints, and specifications
- Experience with grade checking using GPS, lasers, and cut sheets
- Working knowledge of hand tools and equipment used in commercial construction
- Understanding of production rates and quantity tracking
- Detail-oriented with a focus on efficiency and quality
