Earth Science: Remote Sensing of Atmospheric Aerosol and its Climate Effect
About the role
The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities in Earth Science, focusing on remote sensing of atmospheric aerosol and its climate effect. The program is designed to advance NASA’s missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology.
Responsibilities
Theoretical and experimental research is under way in atmospheric science, radiative transfer, and remote sensing. Specific areas of focus include:
- Remote sensing of aerosols and clouds
- Atmospheric correction of satellite imagery of the Earth's surface
- Interaction of aerosols and clouds, and their climatic impact
- Remote sensing of emissions from biomass burning in the tropics
- Calibration of satellite sensors using the Earth's atmosphere and surface reflectance
- Analysis of satellite data
- Field experiments with measurements from aircraft and the ground of aerosol properties
Requirements
To apply, candidates must submit:
- A research proposal
- Three letters of recommendation
- Official doctoral transcript documents
Qualifications
The ideal candidate should have a Doctoral Degree in Earth Science, Atmospheric Science, Remote Sensing, or a related field.
Skills
Strong skills in remote sensing, atmospheric science, and climate modeling are required. Experience with satellite data analysis and field experiments is preferred.
Benefits
The NPP offers a one- to three-year fellowship with unique research opportunities at NASA Centers, Headquarters, or affiliated research institutes. Fellows receive competitive salaries and benefits.
Pay
The salary range for the NPP is $65,000 to $95,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
Schedule
Fellows work full-time, typically 40 hours per week, with flexible scheduling to accommodate research needs.
