Early Childhood Paraeducator

About the role

This position provides instructional and behavioral support to students with disabilities under the direction of certified special education staff. The paraeducator assists in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and behavior intervention plans in a vocational-technical high school setting.

Responsibilities

• Assist certified teachers in delivering instruction to students with disabilities in academic, vocational, and life-skills areas.
• Support students in accessing and participating in vocational-technical programs, including hands-on labs and work-based learning experiences.
• Implement behavior intervention strategies and provide positive behavioral support as outlined in IEPs.
• Assist with personal care needs, including mobility, feeding, and hygiene, as required.
• Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals and behavioral objectives.
• Collaborate with special education teachers, related service providers, and vocational instructors to ensure a cohesive support plan.
• Supervise students during transitions, lunch, and other non-instructional times.
• Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
• Adapt instructional materials and methods to meet individual student needs.
• Participate in team meetings, professional development, and training sessions.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree or higher in education, special education, or related field preferred.
• Experience working with students with disabilities, preferably in a school or vocational setting.
• Knowledge of special education practices, IEPs, and behavior management techniques.
• Ability to lift and physically assist students as needed.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
• Patience, empathy, and a commitment to supporting diverse learners.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to transport students if required.

Skills

• Proficiency in using assistive technology and adaptive equipment.
• Basic computer skills for documentation and communication.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently.
• Crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques (training provided if needed).
