Early Childhood and Elementary Science Teacher

About the role

The Elisabeth Morrow School seeks a passionate educator to facilitate engaging, hands-on Science classes for early childhood and elementary grades on our 14-acre campus. The ideal candidate will awaken students' inner scientists by making science come to life in our maker spaces and outdoor learning environments, including our garden, greenhouse, brook, koi pond, and wooded classroom.

This role reports to the Head of Early Learning and Head of Lower School and collaborates with classroom teachers and other specialists as part of a STEAM team. Responsibilities

• Prepare and teach an inquiry-based curriculum using the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and standards outlined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
• Utilize a high-quality project-based learning (HQ PBL) approach to foster inquiry, design thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• Provide meaningful, engaging, and developmentally appropriate science experiences for early elementary students through diverse approaches (small group instruction, large group instruction, center rotation, read-alouds, nature walks, etc.).
• Integrate the use of the garden, greenhouse, and EMS campus to extend and enhance science learning.
• Teach students in a fair, warm, and open-minded environment while managing the learning space safely and effectively.
• Collaborate with colleagues to create meaningful and realistic multidisciplinary experiences for students.
• Work in partnership with the science faculty to support a powerful continuum of science learning across divisions.
• Maintain open communication with students, families, and administrators.
• Assume responsibilities outside of the classroom, such as lunch and recess coverage, carline duty, and other non-teaching duties.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in science, STEAM, education, or a related field preferred.
• Experience teaching students in early childhood and elementary grade levels.
• Confidence in creating an inclusive and culturally responsive classroom where differing identities and learning styles are honored; familiarity with Responsive Classroom strategies and Restorative Practices.
• Knowledge of best practices for the social, emotional, and cognitive development of students in elementary grades.
• Ability to work with a range of learning styles and build connections with young students to develop an atmosphere of mutual respect.
• Experience with or willingness to learn coding, robotics, 3D design, and skills connected to a maker mindset.
• Comfort with using educational technology to maximize student engagement and differentiate instruction.
• Positive, creative, and encouraging problem solver with a growth mindset and entrepreneurial spirit.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Pay

$60,000 to $80,000 per year.
