Early Career Mechanical Engineer

About the Role

This opportunity involves providing local technical assistance for the design, development, building, testing, and inspecting of mechanical systems on infrastructure, building, and construction projects in the public and private sector. Tasks include basic assistance with research, design, concept development, installation, operation, maintenance, and optimal integration of automatic temperature control, air distribution, hydronic, and plumbing systems, equipment, and processes.

You will generate accurate and concise documentation regarding assigned aspects of the project and ensure responsibilities are delivered with quality that meets or exceeds industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Responsibilities

• Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, and computer-generated reports for project development, design, and construction.
• Perform basic professional mechanical engineering work, including research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, resources, and mechanical systems to ensure conformance with applicable rules and standards.
• Provide entry-level technical assistance on design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies for proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems.
• Assist with verifying site characteristics and provide basic technical support on engineering, design, and construction issues.
• Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation and specifications using electronic systems, drawings, and field/work site logs.
• Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures, including location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies, and surveys.
• Complete assigned training tasks.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• 0 to 1 years of relevant post-education experience.
• Excellent research skills with an analytical mindset.
• Familiarity with design/build processes and concepts.
• Knowledge of relevant mechanical system and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
• Competent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic work environment.
• Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team to meet business objectives.
• Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, and discipline-specific tools.
• Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD and CAM.
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
• Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements, which may extend beyond the typical workweek.
• Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific needs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Engineer in Training Certification.
• Prior internship related to the degree of study and specific engineering discipline.
• Membership and/or active participation in local professional practice organizations.

Pay

Expected salary range (all locations): $62,600 - $85,300. The final compensation will be based on education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and internal equity, as well as the specific geographic location.
