Applicants must be able to work rotating 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week, averaging 15 days worked a month with possibility of overtime. Basic knowledge of computers is very helpful since a majority of the work is done on computers. The job requires dispatcher to answer emergency 911 and non emergency line calls, enter call information into Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) computer and map call and alert appropriate agencies of the call in a timely manner over emergency radios. Dispatchers are required to attend trainings and obtain certifications to maintain employment. Applicant must be able to pass a background check and take a drug screening. Things that are helpful for the job applicant to posses: Staying calm in stressful situations Quick thinking Ability to speak clearly so others can understand Typing on a keyboard (no wpm requirement, but the higher the better) Reliable transportation to work (Being on time is very important) Basic map skills These are just a few and training may change to keep up with technology and ever changing situations.
