E&P Accountant

As a member of the E&P team, this individual will be responsible for the execution of accounting close responsibilities for various operational accounting processes. These processes include capital and LOE accruals, AFE set-up reviews, prepare monthly journal entries and other operational reporting. A successful individual in this position will demonstrate initiative, desire to learn, is able to communicate with various stakeholders, and is able to work both independently and collaboratively. PRIMARY RELATIONSHIPS: Accounting, Internal Audit, Operations, Land, and Tax. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES: Prepare accounting close activities and ensure effective operation of controls and processesLead AFE set-up and master data request processResponsible for recurring journal entries across multiple business unitsParticipate in the implementation of process and reporting improvements within functional area or across other functionsAssist in the evaluation, conclusion on complex, non-routine transactionsPrepare and deliver meaningful financial information, performance metrics, analysis, and reports within functional areaUnderstands and applies competent oil and gas industry specific concepts within area of responsibilityApply accounting and finance principles and understand financial statement and disclosure impactsTimely respond to audit requests and coordinate audit activitiesSeeks to understand accounting impacts outside of area of responsibilityOther duties as assigned KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Experienced with MS Office applications, advanced Excel skills a plusWorking knowledge of SAP Projects, Assets, FICO modules and Power BI and AlteryxWorking knowledge of US GAAPAbility to learn and lead adoption of new and changing systems and applicationsAbility to prioritize and plan work activities, set goals, use time efficiently, and manage competing demandsStrong work ethic and dedication to the achieving group and personal goalsBuild trust and create a rewarding work environment that encourages engagement, ownership, and accountabilityAbility to thrive in both an independent and collaborative work environmentContinuous improvement mindset and a desire to seek out and implement best practicesAbility to understand stakeholder perspectives and work towards common objectives and outcomes aligning to SM's business prioritiesDrive effective risk identification and mitigation through understanding and executing SOX controls and processes Demonstrates accuracy, thoroughness, strong attention to detail, and organizationExcellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Business, with emphasis in Accounting or FinanceCPA preferredBasic knowledge of oil and gas accountingMinimum of 2+ years of relevant work experience required (4+ years in lieu of education) LOCATION/WORK SCHEDULE: Denver – Primarily Remote with ability to commute to the Denver office on short notice and as needed to support business and team requirements. This role should expect 2-3+ days in office on average per month. Travel: Minimal, if any.
