About the Role

Direct Support Professional Seniors 2 work as part of an interdisciplinary team (clinical staff, nurses, families, advocates, etc.) providing services to adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities. Under the direction of a Supervisor, you’ll provide services that enrich the lives of individuals we support, helping them live happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives.

You’ll assist with activities of daily living, including personal care, meal preparation, medication administration, and health maintenance. You’ll also support individuals in developing independent living skills such as money management, community integration, and appropriate social skills. Additionally, you’ll advocate for the individuals you support and mentor/train Direct Support Professionals.

This role involves working in various settings, including residential habilitation and day habilitation services, both within a person’s home and in the community. You’ll adhere to the NADSP code of ethics and the NYS DSP Core Competencies, ensuring person-centered supports.

Staffing coverage requires flexibility to work between shifts, programs, and sites to maintain staffing ratios and ensure the health and safety of the individuals we support.

Responsibilities

• Advocacy – Assists individuals with achieving desired personal outcomes (Core Competency 1).
• Professionalism – Demonstrates professional behavior and ethical standards (Core Competency 3).
• Health Maintenance – Supports individuals in achieving optimal health, including medical appointments, medication administration, and healthy meal planning (Core Competency 4).
• Safety – Provides continuous care to ensure the safety of individuals, colleagues, and self (Core Competency 5).
• Household Maintenance – Ensures routine tasks like meal preparation, cleaning, and laundry are completed (Core Competency 5, 6).
• Personal Care – Supports individuals with all personal care needs, including hands-on assistance (Core Competency 4, 5).
• Independent Living Skills Development – Helps individuals develop skills to increase independence (Core Competency 6).
• Mentorship – Serves as a role model, demonstrating appropriate social interactions and crisis intervention techniques (Core Competency 3).
• Operational Support – Completes documentation, safety checks, and assists with scheduling staff (Core Competency 2, 3).
• Transportation – Provides transportation for individuals using agency vehicles (Core Competency 7).
• Staff Development – Mentors, trains, and provides feedback to Direct Support Professionals (Core Competency 2, 3).
• Performs other duties as needed or assigned.

Requirements

• Demonstrate all skills and attributes outlined in the NYS DSP Core Competencies.
• Ability to work in a diverse and inclusive environment with individuals of various abilities.
• Complete all mandatory trainings within the first 90 days and maintain certifications.
• Professionally and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
• Understand regulations and document services in real-time using electronic technology.
• Ability to multi-task, prioritize responsibilities, and respond to emergencies effectively.
• Proactively identify, report, and resolve safety/medical concerns.
• Ability to count money accurately and complete basic math/banking transactions.
• Complete AMAP (Approved Medication Administration Professional) certification and maintain it without lapse.
• Participate in team meetings and service plan meetings as necessary.
• Ensure service plans are written accurately and timely following life plan meetings.
• Provide person-centered, culturally competent services, including celebrating holidays and attending religious services as needed.
• Provide continuous care and maintain approved staffing ratios, including weekends and holidays.
• Provide on-call coverage for primary and assigned cluster sites.
• Lead and mentor a team of DSPs in a residential setting.
• Access to reliable transportation and a valid, unrestricted, insurable driver’s license.
• Capable of performing all SCIP (Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention) interventions.
• Able to provide hands-on care, including showering, feeding, and physical assistance.
• Ability to perform household cleaning tasks, lift 25+ pounds occasionally, and participate in light to moderate physical activities.
• Ability to ascend/descend stairs and utilize electronic devices.
• Provide transportation using vehicles ranging from sedans to large passenger vans.
• Potential exposure to pets at certain sites.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or
• Associate’s degree in any field plus 2 years of experience, or
• 4 years of experience, or
• Internal candidate with at least 2 years of experience and demonstrated capacity for increased responsibility (performance and mastery of core competencies may also be considered).
• Bilingual (English and Spanish) or fluent in American Sign Language is a plus.
• Works at a Level 2 site (5+ beds), Level 3 site, or any level site with a shared DSP Supervisor or DSP Senior.

Pay

$22.50 per hour.

Schedule

Sunday - Thursday, 3 PM - 11 PM (40 hours per week).
