About the role

Reports to the Executive Director of Transportation. Non-exempt, full-time position with a minimum 12-month commitment.

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred

Experience

  • 5 years of experience in the ground transportation industry preferred
  • At least 3 years of experience in school bus transportation
  • Preferred or willing to obtain State and DOT Driver Safety Certification, CDL, School Bus Certification and/or Instructional Certification

Skills

  • Computer literacy with word-processing and spreadsheets
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; well-developed written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic math skills and detail orientation
  • Mapping and routing skills
  • Ability to lead group instruction
  • Knowledge of adult teaching techniques
  • Must meet state and federal guidelines for and obtain instructor certification

Summary

Oversees and provides the training of all new bus drivers. Assists managers with ongoing staff development of all drivers. Maintains all records required by state and federal DOTs.

Responsibilities

  • Implements and directs the Transportation Department Safety Program, including ongoing driver and safety training, driver retraining, and driver conferences related to safe driving issues
  • Recruits and trains qualified school bus drivers and teaches Oklahoma Department of Education Certification classes for driver trainees
  • Works with Routing Coordinator to ensure safe bus stops and conducts periodic driver surveillance to ensure student safety
  • Maintains the Driver Safety Program
  • Abides by district safety standards and procedures
  • Performs duties and responsibilities as requested by the Executive Director of Transportation or designee

Environmental Conditions

  • Exposure to extremes of heat and cold
  • Possible exposure to bodily fluids

Physical Standards

  • Ability to manipulate objects up to 50 lbs for 20 feet
  • Walking as required to access equipment and perform responsibilities
  • Sitting for length of assigned route
  • Use of hands and arms to assist with wheelchairs, setting brakes, foot pedals, etc.
  • Climbing and descending bus steps
  • Stooping, kneeling, and crouching as required for student care
  • Talking and hearing to communicate concerning job-related duties
  • Close vision (20 inches or less) with or without correction
  • Distance vision (20 feet or more) with or without correction
  • Color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
  • Must pass DOT physical and drug screening
