About the Role
Exploration Team Members (ETMs) perform subsurface exploration duties using conventional drilling or in-situ testing techniques. Work may also include the installation of instrumentation such as piezometers, monitor wells, and inclinometers. ETMs operate as part of a multi-person team on projects.
Responsibilities
- Operate geotechnical drill rigs using methods such as auger drilling, mud rotary drilling, air rotary drilling, and diamond bit coring.
- Perform in-situ testing techniques including cone penetration testing (CPT), pressure meter testing, and rock dilatometer testing.
- Install instrumentation and monitoring wells (e.g., piezometers, inclinometers).
- Oversee a 2- or 3-person drill crew in all tasks associated with drilling operations.
- Conduct surveying, site reconnaissance, and utility clearance tasks.
- Load/unload tooling, materials, and samples; classify soil and rock samples.
- Perform routine maintenance and basic repairs on drilling equipment.
- Prepare internal (daily field forms) and external (DOT Logs) paperwork.
- Drive drilling equipment to and from project locations.
- Inspect and maintain equipment; assist in project preparation and pre-task planning.
- Problem-solve and implement solutions for routine to moderately complex issues with guidance.
- Follow safety rules, guidelines, and standards; participate in pre-task planning and report safety concerns.
- Maintain quality standards on all projects.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in geotechnical and/or environmental drilling.
- Proficient in multiple drilling methods common to the region.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history (may be required).
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Ability to obtain a DOT Medical Card within the first 30 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- State-specific driller/well installation licensure where applicable.
