About the role

This position provides technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving multiple design and advanced building construction projects, construction of transportation systems, traffic operations, maintenance of highways and facilities, or bridge inspection and appraisal in accordance with Department standards. Assists with project planning and oversight, and the development of policies and procedures for area of responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in overseeing project design/drafting involving design calculations and sketches of plans, layouts and typical sections.
  • Captures and compiles complete plan packages for submission to the responsible engineer or architect for review and signature.
  • Develops and prepares consultant work orders and agreements.
  • Develops site layouts utilizing engineering workstations and software.
  • Performs data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments and plan development.
  • Represents the Department at various meetings.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Educational Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline.
  • Relevant Experience: 5 YEARS in Transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

Additional Qualifications

  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Design and plan preparation methods and requirements.
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Program/project planning, development, and management methodologies.
  • Establishing plans and setting objectives and goals that support overall business strategy/results; anticipating and adjusting for problems/roadblocks.
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external.
  • Applying engineering principles, practices and methods in job responsibilities.
  • Writing, reviewing and revising documents to include engineering notes, specifications, standards and procedures.
  • Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints and maps.
  • Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long term deadlines.
  • Analyzing and organizing business and technical data.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Light work: lift up to 20lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10lbs.
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time.
  • Moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another.
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and fingers.
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.

Position Information

  • TxDOT's Austin District is looking for a Drafting Technician (Transportation Specialist) III, IV, or V to join our Bridge & Hydraulics Team at the District Headquarters.
  • This position is geared towards a bridge detailer or CAD technician with experience in producing 2D plans and 3D modeling of bridges, including repair details, rehabilitation plans, and bridge replacement layouts.
  • The role supports our bridge design and construction program by developing accurate, constructible, and well-coordinated plan sets for a wide range of structural repair and replacement projects.
  • This position is for ONE Transportation Specialist III, IV, or V.
