Drafter
Job Summary
Ohmstede is seeking a candidate responsible for developing, revising, and maintaining fabrication drawings and bill of materials for shell and tube heat exchangers and related equipment. This role works closely with engineering to ensure drawings accurately reflect design requirements and are executable by the shop without delay or rework.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Drawing Development & Accuracy - Generate detailed fabrication drawings, layouts, and section views based on engineering calculations, sketches, and customer specifications.
Design Interpretation - Review customer specifications, purchase orders, estimates, and engineering notes to ensure drawings align with job requirements and scope.
Code & Standards Compliance - Ensure all drawings meet applicable ASME, TEMA, API, and company standards prior to release.
BOM Creation & Validation - Develop and maintain accurate bill of materials aligned with drawings, engineering notes, and procurement needs.
Interference & Fit-Up Checks - Create scaled layouts to verify clearances, component fit-up, and assembly feasibility prior to release to shop.
Revision & Change Management - Update drawings based on engineering changes, customer comments, and field/shop redlines while maintaining proper revision control.
Production Support - Interface with shop personnel, QC, and engineering to resolve drawing issues, clarify design intent, and minimize fabrication delays.
Document Control Coordination - Support drawing transmittals and ensure correct revisions are issued for customer approval and internal distribution.
Reverse Engineering - Develop drawings and BOMs from existing equipment, field measurements, or shop components when required.
Data & File Management - Maintain organized electronic records of drawings, revisions, and related documentation in accordance with company procedures.
Continuous Improvement - Identify drawing errors, inefficiencies, or recurring issues and work with engineering to improve standards and practices.

Required Qualifications
Associate degree or technical training in drafting/design (or equivalent experience)
Proficiency in AutoCAD (2D) and/or SolidWorks
Working knowledge of fabrication drawings and bill of materials
Preferred Experience
Experience with shell & tube heat exchangers or pressure vessels
Familiarity with ASME Section VIII, TEMA, and API standards
Experience in a fabrication or heavy industrial environment
Skills
Strong geometry and dimensional calculation ability
Effective communication with engineering, production, and QC teams
Work Environment
An office-based drafting role with frequent interaction on the shop floor. Exposure to fabrication processes, welding, machining, and assembly operations. Requires coordination with production, QC, and engineering teams.
