DPW Streets Maintenance Worker I - First & Third Shift

Position Overview

Essential Functions

  • Operates a wide variety of large municipal vehicles and other heavy construction/maintenance equipment, such as front-end loader, backhoe, street sweepers, automated and rear-loading packers, prentice loader, pavement saw, asphalt roller, sewer cleaners including vacuum equipment, articulated tractors and CDL snow plowing and anti-icing equipment.
  • Performs public works functions such as full depth concrete street repairs including excavation, form setting, pouring and finishing; sidewalk, driveway and curb repairs; full depth asphalt repairs; pothole and skin patching; street sweeping; sanitary and storm sewer cleaning; refuse collection, structure inspection and rebuilding and fence repairs.
  • Performs heavy manual labor or semi-skilled labor outdoors regardless of weather.
  • Reports for overtime work as assigned during public works emergencies.
  • Performs salting, plowing, snow removal, pumping, or storm debris collection outside of the normal work hours.
  • Maintains parks facilities: buildings, grounds and athletic fields
  • Performs maintenance and janitorial work at parks and city facilities.
  • Performs other public works duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education and Experience Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Two years’ experience in the performance of heavy manual or semi-skilled tasks and operation of heavy or medium duty trucks preferred. Prior experience in trade work (such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roofing custodial work, building maintenance, or masonry) strongly preferred.
  • Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements: A valid Wisconsin driver’s license. Class B CDL must be obtained within one year of employment. That time frame may be extended depending on the availability of internal training resources. Wisconsin Class B CDL preferred at time of hire.

Additional Information

  • Ability to safely follow policies and procedures in operating equipment and performing essential functions of job.
  • Ability to meet physical demands of consistently lifting/moving up to 25 pounds, 50 pounds frequently, and occasionally 80 pounds. Must be able to push/pull a cart weighing up to 200 pounds.
  • Ability to apply proper construction and maintenance/repair methods or practices utilized in municipal public works environment.
  • Must be available for periodic call-ins during emergency situations.
