DPW Mechanic Grade 2

40 hours per week, benefited position at $38.01 per hour. CDL and Hoisting licenses required within 6 months of hire. Must own tools and be available for overtime, including emergencies and sanding/plowing operations.

About the Role

The Mechanic - Grade 2 is a skilled mechanic responsible for the maintenance and repair of heavy, medium, and light equipment for the Town of Weston’s Department of Public Works. Hourly rate is subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements.

Responsibilities

• Repair vehicles and equipment in accordance with manufacturers' specifications, operations manuals, diagrams, and sketches using hand and power tools and precision measuring and testing instruments.
• Troubleshoot, diagnose, and correct problems with vehicles and equipment.
• Remove, repair, and replace major components such as engines, transmissions, front and rear end assemblies, hydraulic systems, pneumatic and hydraulic brake systems, and electrical systems.
• Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
• Perform body and frame modifications requiring welding and sheet metal fittings.
• Perform body work and selected painting.
• Pick up, deliver, and unload parts and materials.
• Operate snow removal trucks, sanders, and equipment.
• Assist and provide support in servicing mechanical components at town pump stations, including setup, running, and servicing of emergency equipment.
• Repair equipment and vehicles in the field and assist in towing.
• Train personnel on operating procedures and equipment.
• Maintain necessary records in a complete and accurate manner.
• Perform work in a safe manner in accordance with department safety guidelines and State and Federal Regulations.
• Report unique and unusual situations to the supervisor or designee.
• Perform other related work and assist other departments as required or requested.
• Provide extraordinary customer service.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Must possess own tools.
• Commercial Driver’s License, Class B (required within 6 months of hire).
• Hoisting License to operate a loader, backhoe, sewer-vac, catch basin cleaner, and street sweeper (required within 6 months of hire).
• Demonstrates proficiency in automotive maintenance, hydraulics, and welding techniques.
• Ability to operate test measurement and diagnostic equipment and personal computers, or willingness to develop those skills within one year.
• Ability to work continuously under varying weather conditions.
• Ability to work overtime as requested or required.
• Good working attitude and ability to work with supervisors and peers without conflict, as well as independently with minimum supervision.
• Ability to keep records and make reports.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to read and follow service/repair manuals and understand technical specifications established by regulatory agencies.
• Proficiency in the safe and effective use of powered and hand tools.

Skills

• Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
• Ability to understand and communicate work-related information.

Physical Demands

• Physically fit to perform heavy manual labor, including lifting automotive components up to 200 pounds with assistance.
• Ability to climb into/out of truck bodies.
• Vision correctable to 20/20 with good field and depth perception to operate motor vehicles safely and efficiently.
• Good hand and finger dexterity to use hand tools and make adjustments on equipment.

Pay

$38.01 per hour.

Schedule

40 hours per week. Overtime required for emergencies, sanding, and plowing operations.
