About the role

The City of Auburn Department of Public Works is seeking a dependable, safety-minded Motor Equipment Operator Grade 2 to join our Refuse Collection team. This is an opportunity to perform meaningful work that directly impacts the residents of Auburn every day. Our team is responsible for providing reliable and efficient garbage collection services throughout the City, maintaining clean neighborhoods, and ensuring the safe operation of municipal collection vehicles and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate CDL-required garbage trucks, refuse collection vehicles, and other municipal equipment.
  • Perform residential and/or commercial refuse collection along assigned routes.
  • Collect, load, transport, and properly dispose of municipal refuse.
  • Assist with the collection of bulky items, special pickups, and other refuse-related services as assigned.
  • Perform daily vehicle and equipment inspections and report mechanical or safety concerns.
  • Maintain assigned vehicles and equipment in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
  • Follow established collection routes, schedules, safety procedures, and departmental policies.
  • Respond to changing collection needs, service requests, and operational priorities.
  • Perform snow removal, hauling, and other Department of Public Works duties as assigned.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions throughout the year.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous relationship with City residents and the general public.
  • Work as part of a dedicated team providing essential services to the City of Auburn.

Requirements

  • Valid New York State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Safe driving record.
  • Experience operating heavy trucks, garbage trucks, or other municipal equipment preferred.
  • Dependable, hardworking, and safety-conscious.
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment and work around moving vehicles and machinery.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including walking, lifting, bending, and working around refuse collection equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety, teamwork, and public service.
  • Willingness to perform overtime, emergency work, or other departmental assignments when required.
  • Professional and courteous interaction with residents, coworkers, and the general public.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid Class B New York State driver’s Commercial Driver’s License.

Residency Requirement

All employees must reside within 35 miles of the City of Auburn corporate boundary.
