DPW Laborer

About the role
Semi-skilled or skilled manual work on construction, maintenance, or repair projects. Related work as required.
Works under direct supervision, performing a variety of routine and repetitive tasks that may occasionally be carried out independently but with work checked during progress and upon completion. Makes few contacts beyond immediate associates. Continuous and strenuous physical effort is demanded in operating equipment, standing, lifting, or carrying equipment, tools, and materials while performing duties under varying weather conditions.
Responsibilities
- Works with asphalt and bituminous materials surfacing, resurfacing, and patching streets, sidewalks, parking areas, and bridges.
- Performs manual work in digging and backfilling excavations; handles heavy materials on construction, maintenance, and repair projects.
- Cuts grass, loams, seeds, and lines playing fields.
- Tests and repairs water meters, replacing defective parts and performing necessary adjustments; keeps continuous records of meter installations and repairs.
- Taps water mains and connects services.
- Lays pipe and installs sewer services.
- Cleans storm sewers and catch basins.
- Cleans and rods sanitary sewers.
- Shovels snow and removes ice and snow from walks, steps, drives, and pavements.
- Operates equipment in snow plowing and removal and sanding and/or salting streets, sidewalks, parking lots, etc.
- Works as a mechanical handyman assisting in servicing and maintaining equipment.
- Paints and repairs street signs, equipment, and structures.
- Sets curbing, constructs manholes and catch basins, retaining walls, and performs other masonry work.
Requirements
- Elementary school education.
- Qualifying experience in public works construction.
- Ability to lift heavy objects and to work continuously under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
- Must be available for overtime for emergencies and sanding and plowing operations.
Qualifications
- For Laborer (W-2): CDL License.
- For Laborer/Truck Driver in Training (W-1): Will be enrolled in a driving school as part of employment to obtain a Commercial Driver's License, MA CDL Bas, as a condition of employment.
Pay
- W-2 Laborer: $24.82–$27.81 per hour
- W-1 Laborer/Truck Driver in Training: $21.28–$23.64 per hour
