DPW HEaT Truck Driver (non-commercial)

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Efficiently and safely transport materials and supplies between Black Rock Station (BRS) and the event site as directed.
  • Haul travel trailers to and from the event site, pick-up, tow, and distribute materials on-site, and fulfill any additional requests as approved by direct management.
  • Be willing, prepared and capable of handling any complex loads.
  • Under the direction of the HEaT Transportation Lead and the HEaT Transportation Manager, liaise with different departments to fulfill hauling and towing requests.
  • Ensure loads are safe for transit; effectively load and unload trucks and trailers with attention to safety protocols and standards and communicate to management with any concerns prior to task advancement.
  • Maintain awareness of environment hazards; keep abreast of the current conditions of designated routes, the people and structures surrounding them; be ready to communicate unexpected developments promptly and adjust accordingly.
  • Maintain clear communication and coordinate with the HEaT Transportation Lead, the HEaT Transportation Manager, and all Truck Drivers to ensure the safety and efficiency of deliveries.
  • Promptly answer all calls from the HEaT Dispatcher regarding any necessary hauling or towing requests while keeping the DPW Transportation Manager updated and informed of current whereabouts.
  • Make requests of, and follow directions provided by, the HEaT Dispatcher relating to heavy equipment tasked for the loading and unloading of hauled materials.
  • Take ownership of and assume accountability for, the accurate tracking and recording of materials transported, including the logging of pick-up and drop-off locations and times.
  • Maintain vehicle records, performing daily pre and post usage safety checks, identifying required safety equipment on board and that the truck is properly prepared for work; immediately report any issues or required usage needs to the HEaT Transportation Manager.
  • Be available to work on-call during designated “on call” hours as well as regular shifts.

LEARNING AND TEACHING

  • Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required:
    • Experienced in flatbed driving, hauling, and towing with the ability to drive with and maneuver trailers into tight spaces
    • Able to safely load, transport, and unload large and complex materials and equipment; Capable of lifting heavy loads, climbing in and onto vehicles and structures, and throwing tie-down straps.
    • Able to safely navigate and drive on BRC streets and access roads that are congested with participants, bicycles, and vehicles; Understanding of Burning Man transportation procedures and prepared to respond quickly and calmly to any emergency.
    • Able to maintain organization of duties and adhere to tight scheduling, completing tasks in a timely, safe manner; Able to remain calm under stress while maintaining ability to think critically, problem solve and respond effectively to unforeseen events.
    • Able to work as part of a team and receive constructive feedback; Is reliable, honest and operates with a high level of behavioral integrity.
    • Maintain a respectful demeanor and tactful communication with all participants, Burning Man Departments and staff; Has experience and is comfortable with two-way radio communication with the ability to sustain professionalism in any situation.
    • Willing and able to take and follow direction with good listening and communication skills.
    • Experience working in remote wilderness and/or desert environments.
    • Capable of working in an extreme environment including crowds, drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.
    • Able to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada.
  • Preferred:
    • Certified First Responder or experience in Basic First Aid training.
    • Experienced in a service related business.
    • Knowledge of basic automotive repair.

COMPENSATION

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position: From August - September is $17.00 to $18.00 per hour.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

Off-playa: Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.
On-playa: Work is primarily sedentary but will also include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Some of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
