DOTP-Operator Mechanic

About the Role

The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for handling routine maintenance and repairs on Plant facilities and equipment. The role operates under the Plant Maintenance Program and associated procedures, performing duties independently with general direction.

Responsibilities

• Participate in the Plant's preventive maintenance program, including routine maintenance and collecting trending information for the Maintenance Manager.
• Track spare parts usage and complete reports to ensure timely replacement.
• Assist in physical inventories and maintain Plant operating manuals, technical references, prints, diagrams, and preventive/predictive maintenance records.
• Set up and operate machine shop tools to perform precision machine work.
• Align and balance rotating equipment, and inspect/repair turbines, heat exchangers, pumps, fans, and similar equipment.
• Assemble and repair tubing, piping, valves, and fittings, including certified welding for high/low temperature or pressure applications.
• Assemble, disassemble, repair, and adjust electrical and mechanical equipment.
• Create, update, and maintain accurate plant records using SAP and other plant systems.
• Support training, procedure development, contractor oversight, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Perform additional duties such as housekeeping, safety program activities, and general facility upkeep.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED and 2 years’ related power plant experience OR Associate’s degree in Instrumentation or related field with 0 years’ experience.
• Valid State Driver’s License.
• Must pass the NRG pre-employment assessment test and receive a "Recommended" rating.
• DOT PHMSA covered position: Must pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen and background check, and participate in the NRG DOT Program.

Preferred Qualifications

• Four years of experience as a power plant mechanic, millwright, or equivalent.
• Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the role.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
• Must successfully complete a Maintenance Mechanics test.
• Experience with turbines, pumps, HVAC, welding, or machining is highly desirable.
• Strong organizational skills.

Skills

• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and decision-making skills for time-sensitive or high-pressure situations.
• Knowledge of plant safety systems, including Lockout/Tagout and emergency response.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively in a team.
• Ability to learn and apply complex mechanical systems with minimal supervision.
• Capability to multitask, perform basic calculations, and adapt to changing priorities.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a power plant environment, both indoors and outdoors, in all temperatures and weather conditions. Tasks may involve:

• Exposure to high noise levels, energized electrical equipment, rotating machinery, confined spaces, and elevated work areas.
• Climbing ladders, stairways, and working from platforms or aerial devices at heights of 5 feet or greater, including elevations exceeding 250 feet.
• Rotating or irregular shifts, including 24/7 emergency callouts.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform physically demanding work, including walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, twisting, climbing, pushing, pulling, and using hand tools.
• Lift, carry, and position tools/equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, including work in awkward positions.
• Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), such as respirators, safety glasses, goggles, and steel-toed footwear.
• Ability to discern colors and work around hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
• Respond appropriately in stressful or emergency situations requiring immediate action.
