About the Role

The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for handling routine maintenance and repairs on Plant facilities and equipment. The role operates under the Plant Maintenance Program and associated procedures, performing tasks with minimal supervision and making decisions within prescribed guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the Plant's preventive maintenance program, performing routine maintenance duties and collecting trending information for the Maintenance Manager.
  • Track spare parts usage and complete usage reports to ensure timely replacement of items; assist in physical inventories.
  • Maintain and update Plant operating manuals, technical references, prints, diagrams, and preventive/predictive maintenance records.
  • Set up and operate machine shop tools to perform precision machine work to close tolerances.
  • Align and balance rotating equipment, and inspect and repair turbines, heat exchangers, pumps, fans, and similar equipment.
  • Assemble and repair tubing, piping, valves, and fittings subjected to extreme temperatures or pressures, including certified welding tasks.
  • Assemble, disassemble, repair, and adjust all types of electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Create, update, and maintain accurate plant records using SAP and other plant systems to support maintenance, inventory, and operational activities.
  • Support training activities, procedure development, contractor oversight, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including housekeeping, safety program activities, and general facility upkeep.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED and 2 years of related power plant experience OR Associate’s degree in Instrumentation or a related field with 0 years of experience.
  • Valid State Driver’s License.
  • Must pass the NRG pre-employment assessment test with a "Recommended" rating.
  • This is a DOT PHMSA covered position; candidates must pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen and background check for drug and alcohol testing. Once hired, participation in the NRG DOT Program is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the role, typically acquired through four years of high school education.
  • Four years of experience as a power plant mechanic, millwright, or equivalent.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must successfully complete a Maintenance Mechanics test.
  • Experience with turbines, pumps, HVAC, welding, or machining is highly desirable.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Skills

  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and decision-making skills, with the ability to work independently in time-sensitive or high-pressure situations.
  • Knowledge of plant safety systems and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout and emergency response.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to learn and apply complex mechanical systems with minimal supervision.
  • Capability to multitask, perform basic calculations, and adapt to changing operational priorities.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a power plant environment, both indoors and outdoors, in all temperatures and weather conditions. Tasks may involve:

  • Exposure to high noise levels, energized electrical equipment, rotating machinery, confined spaces, and elevated work areas.
  • Climbing ladders, stairways, and working from platforms, aerial devices, or heights of 5 feet or greater, including elevations exceeding 250 feet.
  • Rotating or irregular shifts, with the ability to respond to emergency callouts 24/7.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, twisting, climbing, pushing, pulling, and using hand tools.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and position tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, including work in awkward positions.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators, safety glasses, goggles, and steel-toed footwear.
  • Ability to discern colors and work around hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in stressful or emergency situations requiring immediate action.
