About the Role

As a Docketing Technician (Office Automation) for the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) for the Southern District of California, you will provide procedural and systemic information on all aspects of docketing systems for Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) and legal support staff.

At the full performance level, responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Responsibilities

  • Develop or request new or modified reports and internal processing procedures to meet changes in USAO needs or to improve docketing efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Input information into databases and systems, update records, and route to appropriate USAO employee.
  • Develop and maintain automated records from initial referral to final disposition and case file closure.
  • Determine incoming cases or legal actions requiring special handling and make appropriate referral prior to coding and data entry.
  • Accept service of legal documents from opposing counsel or representatives.
  • Conduct periodic case certification process and work with AUSAs to verify case information.
  • Receive inquiries on case status from client agencies, the Court, USAO staff, defense counsel, and other individuals, exercising confidentiality, tact, discretion, and judgment in determining what information may be properly released.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing.
  • Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
  • You must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)

Qualifications

GS-7: To be eligible at the GS-7 level, you must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level. Specialized Experience is defined as performing docketing functions and developing legal reports by using computerized case tracking and record-keeping systems for a law or legal office (or equivalent). Examples of specialized experience include:

  • Maintaining and extracting data from automated docketing databases and systems from initial referral to final disposition and case file closure.
  • Extracting requested program and/or statistical data on a regularly scheduled or ad hoc basis.
  • Reviewing records or reports to identify recurring errors.
  • Recognizing data elements that are missing and locating them as necessary.
  • Performing necessary research to correct and update case records.
  • Determining when a case may be closed out of the system and reviewing case files to ensure all information is correct.
