About the role

The Dock Clerk – Guaranteed Extra Board performs duties for the Duluth and Two Harbors Ore Docks, including inventory management (processing train and vessel movements), communication with internal and external customers and vendors, scheduling, warehouse duties (including operating a forklift), and maintaining a variety of records. Work assignments are determined in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

The work location is at the Duluth Docks headquarters, with support provided to both the Duluth and Two Harbors locations. The incumbent may need to fill vacancies at both ports. This is a unionized position; pay and benefits are governed by the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare data using computer terminals.
  • Perform all functions of the Dock Information Systems, including shipping boats and obtaining accurate weight sheets for trains arriving at the Duluth and Two Harbors Docks.
  • Perform callouts for workforce needs in accordance with various union agreements.
  • Record, maintain, and provide train and vessel arrival, departure, and other related information.
  • Provide customers with accurate messages indicating inventory status.
  • Communicate train orders, movement instructions, and other information to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Operate vehicles and forklifts.
  • Communicate by telephone and email to complete various tasks and instructions.
  • Maintain Working Boards, including creating bulletins and awarding positions, bumping, vacancies, and other occurrences.
  • Maintain timely Staff Actions for changes of positions, medical leave, and furloughs.
  • Maintain storehouse inventory levels through issuance, orders, and audit requirements.
  • Perform other essential functions as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Standard working conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday.
  • Ability to change schedule to cover vacancies.
  • Available to work shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidents.
  • Work indoors and outdoors (depending on assignment) in various types of weather and environmental conditions.
  • Sitting for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, climb, kneel, crouch, balance, and walk on uneven surfaces.
  • May be required to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

Requirements

  • Experience or general knowledge of Systems, Applications, and Products (SAP), SharePoint, Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Certified or able to pass certification for operating a forklift.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must qualify on all covered Dock positions for guarantee.
  • Successfully complete a typing or data entry assessment and demonstrate computer literacy.
  • Ability to solve problems and troubleshoot while working autonomously.
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, and maintain good organizational skills.
  • Exceptional ability to work autonomously, adapt to different situations, and multitask.
  • Demonstrate good teamwork skills and ability to maintain positive interactions with others.
  • Good verbal, reading comprehension, and writing skills; ability to analyze situations and make effective decisions.
  • Demonstrate a customer-service focus and dedication to meeting established standards of quality and safety.
  • Ability to maintain an overall level of safety awareness in the work environment.

Training

The incumbent participates in a training program involving job shadowing and practical application, typically taking 45 working days to complete.
