DLAR Trainer

Grade Level 44 | Full-Time Staff Position

About the Role

The PI Trainer is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering comprehensive training programs for investigators and research personnel who utilize DLAR facilities and resources. This position serves as a primary point of contact for investigator orientation, required training, workshops, and education related to the appropriate and safe use of research animals and DLAR facilities.

Working in collaboration with DLAR veterinarians, the Office of the Attending Veterinarian (OAV), research analysts, and other DLAR personnel, the PI Trainer develops and maintains training materials, coordinates hands-on and instructional training, and supports education on animal handling, restraint, substance administration, injection techniques, euthanasia, aseptic surgery, postoperative care, enrichment, and other research-related procedures. The position also coordinates specialized educational opportunities and serves as a liaison with external vendors and internal partners to support investigator training needs.

The PI Trainer maintains accurate training records and databases, develops training metrics and reports, supports training-related SOP development and maintenance, and assists with updating the DLAR website content and information dissemination. The position also provides quality assurance and research support by educating investigators on DLAR processes, equipment, service request systems, enrichment requirements, and specialized research procedures.

All responsibilities are performed in accordance with applicable DLAR SOPs, safety requirements, and institutional policies.

Responsibilities

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (BS) in a related field.
• 4 years of related experience.
• Computer literacy (Windows, Excel, database experience).
• Website design experience or willingness to learn.
• Previous training experience.
• Knowledge, handling, and care of animals.

Preferred Qualifications

• AALAS Certification at LATg level.

Physical Requirements

• Animal handling (including carcasses).
• Risk of injuries from use of equipment on the job.
• Exposure to temperature extremes, cuts/punctures, and bloodborne/airborne pathogens.
• Occasional lifting, pushing, and/or pulling objects up to 30 lbs.
• Regularly sitting at a computer workstation for extended periods with repetitive motions (e.g., typing).
• Utilizing mouse, keyboard, and phone for portions of the day.
• Ability to travel to various locations on and off-campus for meetings and training.

Pay

$44,678–71,469 per year

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 7:30 am to 4:30 pm (40 hours per week). Occasional additional time may be required in evenings, nights, holidays, and/or weekends to accomplish work goals.
