About the role
The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department within the UC San Diego School of Medicine (SOM) and is responsible for fulfilling its teaching, research, and clinical missions. The Division Administrator (DA) serves as a member of Medicine Leadership team, managing financial and operational activities of the assigned units.
Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of financial and operational activities of the assigned units, including the management of the divisional programs, centers, fellowship programs, recruitment of faculty in both clinical and research arenas.
- Negotiate and implement faculty salaries (under the purview and direction of the Divisions Chiefs).
- Develop, manage, and project complex academic, research, and clinical compensation plans.
- Develop and manage operational reporting structure, grow and develop staff regardless of reporting relationship, achieve goals and objectives through initiative and management leadership, collaborate with faculty, medical center, medical group, School of Medicine, and other campus resources.
- Work with the Division of Geriatrics and other Academic Divisions as assigned by the Administrative Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine.
- Oversee program administration, program development, and research activities.
- Provide supervision and guidance to research staff.
- Receive assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals.
- Exercise judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action.
- Recommend changes to department policies and practices.
- Identify risks and respond accordingly.
- Provide priority setting and work flow analysis.
Requirements
- Doctorate in related area OR equivalent experience/education/training.
- Five or more years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience supervising staff and students in an academic or research setting.
- Academic background and experience in relevant area of research (clinical and research).
- Relevant areas include clinical and research.
- Ability to build relationships, collaborate and problem solve both internally and with external organizations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of program development as well as grant proposal development and administration.
- Demonstrated leadership skills including effective communication, negotiation, coaching, and conflict resolution.
- Advanced oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Knowledge of human resources management practices and policies.
- Knowledge of financial principles and budget practices.
- Demonstrated knowledge university, state, and federal policies that influence higher education.
- Advanced demonstrated skills in decision support and business development in clinical and/or academic setting.
