District Sign Technician III-IV-SILVERTON

About the role

Performs highly skilled transportation-related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records, ordering signs and materials, and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance-related work as required; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions
  • Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products
  • Mixes and places concrete for sign support foundations; moves cement bags and other related items
  • Operates a boom and bucket truck and/or specialized sign truck to install roadway signs
  • Operates radios
  • Orders supplies and materials from district shop
  • Orders signs from the regional sign shop
  • Performs preventive maintenance on sign truck
  • Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations, and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other departmental guidance
  • Trains other technicians on sign installation and safety procedures
  • Inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs
  • Conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping, and retroreflective pavement markers (RPMs)
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

District Sign Tech IV (additional responsibilities)

  • Coordinates and conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping, and retroreflective pavement markers (RPMs)
  • Coordinates and inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs
  • Coordinates, performs, and maintains inventory of signs

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • 2 years of experience in sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience (experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent)
  • Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-per-year basis

Preferred Qualifications

  • Commercial Driver’s License

Skills

  • Inventory/stock control procedures
  • Knowledge of the Sign Crew Field Book
  • Installing and repairing signs
  • Ability to work in cramped spaces (bend, stoop, crawl) and at varied heights

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32°F and/or above 100°F for more than one hour
  • Required to wear protective gear: respirator, hard hat, or other devices
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Climbing: ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
  • Balancing: walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Crouching: bending body downward and forward by bending legs and spine
  • Kneeling: bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
  • Lifting: raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
  • Visual acuity: determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures

This position requires a pre-employment physical and passing a drug test. Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
