About the Role

Responsible for the efficient operation and maximization of sales and profits of all retail stores within an assigned area. Ensures operations align with established Company policies and objectives. Develops store teams to deliver outstanding customer satisfaction through associates who are friendly, responsive, knowledgeable, and passionate about the food business. Coaches and counsels store directors and department managers to operate stores that are clean, fresh, well-stocked, and merchandised to reflect the neighborhood they serve. Holds store leadership accountable for understanding and exceeding fiscal responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Financial:
    • Develop store teams to achieve and exceed period, quarterly, and yearly financial metrics (sales, EBITDA, DSI, shrink, OSAT, etc.).
    • Review sales, P&L, and labor reports to evaluate trends, opportunities, and underlying problems.
    • Coach store directors to resolve issues and meet or exceed operational metrics.
    • Ensure store directors and department managers understand fiscal responsibilities and hold them accountable for commitments.
    • Develop and coach store leadership in financial management, including budgets, projections, sales forecasts, and cost control.
    • Maximize return on investment by managing operating costs, labor, shrink, inventory, and asset management.
    • Review and approve store operating commitments with store directors.
  • Merchandising:
    • Develop store teams to execute company merchandising initiatives while remaining locally relevant to maximize sales and profits.
    • Review advertising and promotional needs with the marketing team to improve effectiveness and develop plans for new or remodeled stores.
    • Monitor competitive operations in the assigned area and implement aggressive plans to counteract sales or profit loss.
    • Evaluate local competition from operational, customer, and cultural perspectives.
    • Stay abreast of new ideas, innovations, and trends in the food industry.
    • Ensure store teams execute company and division merchandising initiatives using best practices.
    • Coach store teams to develop profitable sales concepts through creative local merchandising.
    • Solicit customer feedback from store directors to evaluate opportunities based on local demographics.
    • Conduct regular store walks with management to ensure merchandising programs are executed, order-writing is accurate, in-stock conditions are maintained, and price integrity is upheld.
    • Maintain a strong community presence through support of company, division, and store-specific charitable initiatives.
  • People Development:
    • Develop store directors and department managers to maximize employee potential and create engaged associates.
    • Model an open-door communication policy focused on listening and fostering a collaborative work environment.
    • Ensure accountability for staffing, including interviewing, selection, and development of future leaders.
    • Implement training tools, performance coaching, development plans, performance management, succession planning, diversity initiatives, change management, and recognition/reward programs.
    • Manage staffing for the assigned area and develop store directors to fulfill these responsibilities through robust succession planning.
    • Maintain positive working relationships with store support staff, suppliers, and the community.
    • Ensure retail stores operate within all federal, state, and local laws and maintain good relationships with regulatory agencies.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in business or a related field and/or equivalent work experience. Graduate of the Retail Management Certificate Program preferred.
  • Experience: 5–10 years of retail/category experience, 15 total years in the grocery industry, and 5 years of people management experience.

Skills

  • Working knowledge of procurement procedures, economics, marketing, mathematics, and accounting principles.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data from reports and respond with appropriate solutions.
  • Strong organizational and supervisory skills, capable of managing large teams effectively.
  • Ability to motivate and work collaboratively to achieve results.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and public speaking communication skills.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of people in person and over the telephone.
  • Ability to represent the company’s interests to outside vendors.
  • Analytical ability and mental alertness to ensure accurate, safe, and thorough completion of work activities.
  • Ability to concentrate and handle frequent interruptions.

Work Environment

  • Work may be performed in a temperature-controlled environment.
  • Requires sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods.
  • May spend long periods at a desk or computer terminal using calculators, keyboards, telephones, and other office equipment.
  • Stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching may be required.
  • Fast-paced workdays; some evening and weekend work may be required.

Travel Requirements: 75%+ of time is spent traveling.

Pay

The salary range is $127,300 to $178,420 annually. Starting salary varies based on criteria such as location, experience, and qualifications. Flexibility may be available for exceptional candidates.
