About the role

Assumes overall responsibility for the day-to-day administrative, technical, and professional operations of one of the Transportation and Highways Department’s Regional Maintenance Districts. Supervises, directs and provides logistic and strategic planning with regard to the deployment of all staff engaged in the year round maintenance of County roads and highways.

Responsibilities

• Maintain written records as required, perform measurements or other routine computations, provide timely and accurate written and verbal reports on activities in the field, and communicate with professionalism to diverse groups.
• Manage the resourcing and execution of all manpower, equipment, and daily maintenance assignments for the day-to-day operations of the Regional Maintenance District.
• Exercise good judgment when evaluating situations and making decisions, follow instructions, and relate well with others.
• Understand and apply the rules, regulations, and protocols governing employee performance and behavior as set forth in labor contracts and County personnel ordinances.
• Resolve disputes in the workplace.
• Travel moderately to extensively to work assignments throughout Cook County, including working outdoors in inclement weather.

Requirements

• Twelve (12) years of highway engineering work experience in Public Works or Management Operations, which includes but is not limited to the following operations: maintenance of highways and their appurtenances, such as pavement patching, minor resurfacings, drainage systems, bridges, and landscaping within roadway jurisdiction, snow, and ice removal, mowing and vegetation control.
• Two (2) years’ supervisory experience in Public Works or Maintenance Operations is required.

Qualifications

• Current valid driver’s license is required.

Skills

• Knowledge of the proper safe operation of various road maintenance equipment.
• Ability to supervise, plan, assign, coordinate, and direct the work assignments of support staff engaged in highway maintenance, including Laborers, Road Equipment Operators, and Motor Vehicle Drivers.
• Ability to keep abreast of community trends and developments which may impact field operations.
• Ability to understand and apply the rules, regulations, and protocols governing employee performance and behavior as set forth in labor contracts and County personnel ordinances.
• Ability to resolve disputes in the workplace.
