About the role
The District Engineer is a key contributor to Coconino County Flood Control District’s transformational leadership vision, providing engineering guidance and leadership for complex and varied flood mitigation and forest restoration projects while ensuring capital investment goals set by the Board of Directors are met.
The role involves close collaboration with consulting engineering firms that support the District in achieving its nationally recognized goals. The District Engineer also supervises and works closely with the District’s Hydrologist to implement directives of the National Flood Insurance Program and the County’s Drainage Criteria Manual.
Responsibilities
- Provide engineering guidance and leadership for flood mitigation and forest restoration projects.
- Ensure compliance with the Board of Directors’ capital investment goals.
- Collaborate with consulting engineering firms to achieve District objectives.
- Supervise and work closely with the District’s Hydrologist to implement National Flood Insurance Program directives and the County’s Drainage Criteria Manual.
- Lead during flood emergencies, utilizing rain and stream gauges and flood emergency notification systems.
- Communicate with elected officials, funding agencies, partners, and the public to secure project support.
Requirements
- In-depth hydrological engineering knowledge and practical engineering experience.
- Supervisory, coaching, and leadership experience.
- Knowledge of a wide range of flood mitigation and control measures, including channels, storm drain systems, detention/retention basins, berms, and flood retarding/dam structures.
- Proficiency in hydrological modeling using software tools such as FLO-2D and HEC-RAS.
- Experience leading during flood emergencies.
- Ability to communicate effectively with elected officials, funding agencies, partners, and the public.
