About the Role

The employees of the Clerk of District Court of Lewis and Clark County shall strive for service excellence and through their dedication and professionalism, implement policies in conformance with the laws of Montana and the United States of America. The employees of the Clerk of Court's office are committed to ensuring equal access to the Lewis and Clark County District Court, court records, and court services. The purpose of the Clerk of District Court's office is to provide public access to District Court, and to maintain and preserve the records of the District Court.

Responsibilities

  • Performs basic court support duties and clerical tasks;
  • Prepares for and attends court sessions;
  • Swears in witnesses;
  • Records and disposes of exhibits and administrative records for individual court cases;
  • Types minutes of proceedings and makes copies for individual files;
  • Distributes orders and notices;
  • Provides case flow management for assigned department;
  • Sets court calendar for court hearings and meetings provides notice to attorneys;
  • Establishes and maintains a tickler system for pending motions for assigned department;
  • Maintains information relative to qualifications and availability of jurors;
  • Selects and notifies prospective jurors;
  • Typies letters and legal documents;
  • Provides general office reception, filing, docketing and typing duties;
  • Performs general reception duties for assigned department;
  • Performs jury bailiff duties;
  • Enforces prescribed courtroom decorum;
  • May instruct and supervise other clerical staff;
  • Prepares records for court cases to be submitted to the Supreme Court, other judicial districts, federal court and the Sentence Review Division of the Montana Supreme Court;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • The knowledge, skills, and abilities are acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years of clerical experience.
  • Legal office or court experience preferred.

Summary

Examples of Knowledge: Federal statutes and the Montana Code Annotated; District Court policies and procedures; Bailiff duties and responsibilities; Legal clerical practices and procedures; Business English, spelling, grammar and math; Confidentiality regulations and practices applicable to court proceedings.

Physical Demands

  • Duties are generally performed in an office environment where hazards and discomforts are controlled and modifiable.
  • This position requires the ability to stand, bend at the waist, kneel, reach over the head, talk, hear, and see.
  • Must be able to move or lift documents and materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Position requires knowledge and use of typical office equipment including telephone, copiers, fax machines and personal computer.
  • Position requires occasional contact with fellow employees plus frequent contact with attorneys and citizens.

Special Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check.
