About the Role
This position involves a variety of material handling and inventory tasks within DLA Distribution San Joaquin, CA. The role is mission essential, requiring work during emergencies to ensure continuation of essential functions.
Responsibilities
- Perform stock selection, stow, location survey, physical inventory, and material handling.
- Examine and identify materials, pack items using standard packing methods, and operate Material Handling Equipment (MHE).
- Receive, unload, and process incoming shipments; verify documentation against container or packing labels.
- Report overages, shortages, misdirected, or damaged materials following established procedures.
- Determine appropriate packing methods based on commodity/item type and assemble items for shipment.
- Ensure shipments are properly loaded onto conveyances and check the condition of shipping containers.
- Count items during inventories, maintain tally listings, and assist in resolving discrepancies.
- Operate material handling equipment such as forklifts (up to 15,000 pounds), warehouse tractors, or general-purpose vehicles.

- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Appointment is subject to a favorable suitability or fitness determination; unfavorable background checks may result in removal.
- Non-Sensitive position; Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) status: Non-Exempt.
- Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered or exempt from Selective Service.
- Must possess or obtain a REAL ID or acceptable identification for federal facility access.
- Pre-employment physical is required.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license.
- Must obtain and maintain licenses/certifications required by installation, federal, state, and local laws, including a valid state driver’s license for government vehicle operation.
Qualifications
Applicants will be rated based on the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. While no specific length of experience is required, you must meet screen-out elements and demonstrate the necessary knowledge and skills through experience and training. Emphasis is placed on the quality of experience rather than duration. Volunteer experience (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) is also considered.
Physical Effort & Working Conditions
- Stands on hard surfaces for extended periods; involves bending, stooping, and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions.
- Lifts and carries items up to 40 pounds; uses weight handling equipment or receives assistance for heavier items.
- Works in environments that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, poorly lighted, or outdoors.
- Exposed to risks such as cuts, scrapes, bruises, muscle strain, noise, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock.
- Wears protective clothing, including steel-toed shoes, respirators, safety glasses, and earplugs.
- Mechanized roller conveyors are a normal part of material routing and distribution.
