Distribution Interconnections Planning Engineer

About the role

The Interconnections Planning Distribution Engineer position offers opportunities to gain experience with Distributed Energy Resource modeling, area contingency studies, and real-world applications in Georgia's growing renewable energy sector. The successful candidate will provide technical review and support for Distributed Generation (DG) projects, work closely with various Southern Company Services (SCS) and Georgia Power Company (GPC) workgroups, and learn about energy procurement programs. For candidates not currently residing in the Metro Atlanta area, relocation assistance may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Responsibilities

• Review Distribution Generation (DG) Interconnections Agreements for projects approved by the GA Public Service Commission (PSC).
• Provide technical support for project studies:
  • Perform and coordinate Transmission and Distribution system studies, including Load-Rejection Transient Overvoltage (TOV) Analysis, Stiffness Analysis, Integrated Transmission System (ITS) Assessment, and Detailed Load Flow Studies.
  • Conduct quality review of interconnection facilities design and assess the need for company upgrades for various programs.
• Perform technical review of contracts prior to execution (Interconnection Agreements and amendments, if needed).
• Provide technical support and insight to other GPC workgroups about various aspects of generator interconnections and system impacts.

Requirements

• 4-year B.S. Engineering Degree or Engineering Technology Degree (Electrical discipline preferred).
• Advanced certifications preferred (e.g., Professional Engineer license).

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience with processes related to planning, design, operation, and/or maintenance of Transmission, Distribution, or Generation assets.
• Specific experience related to generator interconnection processes and implementation is preferred.
• Experience with distribution system planning and modeling software is preferred.
• Knowledge of electric utility operating and construction practices, land requirements and regulations, budgeting, scheduling, and general business practices.
• Analytical skills to evaluate progress, identify problem areas, evaluate alternatives, financial impacts, and determine viable solutions to meet customer and company needs.
