Distribution Engineer - Experienced Professional

About the Role

WSP is seeking an experienced Distribution Engineer for our Fort Worth, TX or Tyler, TX office. Join our Power & Energy Distribution Services Team and contribute to a growing organization that addresses client challenges with global expertise in power delivery, generation, and program management. This role involves designing medium voltage electric distribution systems (120/240V – 24.9kV), including overhead and underground infrastructure, while ensuring projects meet safety standards, budget, and schedule constraints.

Responsibilities

• Assist in creating and reviewing third-party design documents, procurement lists, and project plans.
• Support senior engineers with research and recommendations for design requirements, field equipment applications, and operations.
• Prepare data visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, and illustrations for presentations or analyses.
• Maintain quality control standards for accurate calculations, statistical analysis, and reporting.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams of engineers, drafters, designers, and construction professionals to execute project work, including design layouts, cost calculations, and compliance with specifications and regulatory standards.
• Assist with scoping and development of small- to medium-sized projects.
• Contribute to technical reports and presentations explaining research and findings related to electrical engineering issues.
• Conduct engineering studies and surveys to address design and construction challenges or plan for future needs.
• Analyze and interpret field investigation data, assisting in developing action plans for low- to mid-level risk mitigation.
• Assist in preparing and implementing site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
• Work collaboratively with other engineers and disciplines on projects involving electrical infrastructure authorities for Federal, State, regional, and locally funded initiatives.
• Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and exercise responsible decision-making regarding company resources.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
• 3 to 5 years of relevant post-education experience designing medium voltage power distribution systems in utility or industrial/commercial environments.
• Engineer in Training Certification.
• Proficiency in GISWorks’ Distribution Design Studio (DDS).
• Exposure to operations and project controls for reporting purposes.
• Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, and design/build processes, including permitting and project-related issues.
• Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including rehabilitation and new design.
• Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand compliance requirements.
• Knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, and record-keeping requirements.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engaging with engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
• Ability to learn new techniques, work independently, and follow company policies.
• Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
• Experience with discipline-specific design software (DDS, STORMS Work Management, CAD).
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge and reach effective solutions.
• Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol policies.
• Flexibility to work extended schedules as required by project needs.
• Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Engineering.
• Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
• Experience managing small to mid-size projects.
• 10-Hour OSHA Construction Safety Training.
• Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training.
