Distribution Engineer - Experienced Professional

WSP is seeking an experienced Distribution Engineer for our Fort Worth, TX or Tyler, TX office. As a Distribution Engineer, you will develop detailed designs for medium voltage electric distribution systems, including overhead and underground infrastructure from 120/240V to 24.9kV. Your work will ensure projects meet client requirements, safety standards, and budget/schedule constraints. Responsibilities include producing construction-ready drawings (using tools like DDS, AUD, AutoCAD, or MicroStation), performing system layouts, material estimates, and coordinating with clients and internal teams to support project execution from design through construction.
Responsibilities
- Assist in creating and reviewing third-party design documents, procurement lists, and project plans.
- Support senior engineers with research and recommendations for design requirements, field equipment applications, and operations.
- Prepare data visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, and illustrations for presenting findings.
- Maintain quality control standards for accurate calculations, statistical analysis, and reporting.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams of engineers, drafters, designers, and construction professionals to execute project work, including design layouts, cost calculations, and compliance with specifications and regulatory standards.
- Assist with the development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects.
- Contribute to technical reports and presentations explaining research and findings related to design and electrical engineering issues.
- Conduct engineering studies and surveys to address design and construction challenges or plan for future needs.
- Analyze and interpret field investigation data, assisting in developing action plans for low- to mid-level risk mitigation.
- Assist in preparing and implementing site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
- Work collaboratively with engineers and other disciplines on projects involving electrical infrastructure authorities for Federal, State, regional, and locally funded projects.
- Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and exercise responsible decision-making regarding company resources.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
- 3 to 5 years of relevant post-education experience designing medium voltage power distribution systems in utility or industrial/commercial environments.
- Engineer in Training Certification.
- Proficiency in GISWorks’ Distribution Design Studio (DDS).
- Exposure to operations and project controls for reporting purposes.
- Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, design/build processes, and their application to permitting and project work.
- Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including rehabilitation and new design.
- Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand their requirements.
- Knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engaging with engineering and non-engineering audiences.
- Effective self-leadership, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to learn new techniques, follow instructions, work independently, and comply with company policies.
- Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Experience with discipline-specific design software (DDS, STORMS Work Management, CAD).
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge and reach effective, economical solutions.

- Flexibility to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek based on project requirements.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Engineering.
- Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
- Experience managing small to mid-size projects.
- 10-Hour OSHA Construction Safety Training.
- Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training.
