Distribution Applications Engineer I
Job Summary
The Distribution Applications Engineer I supports the development, implementation, and operation of Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) and distribution automation technologies that enhance electric system reliability, efficiency, and operational awareness. This role configures, maintains, and troubleshoots communications between field devices and ADMS platforms while supporting smart grid initiatives, voltage reduction programs, and automated power factor control.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical support, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting for ADMS, SCADA, and related distribution automation systems.
- Program, configure, test, and maintain substations, RTUs, intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), and field communication networks.
- Develop and implement distribution automation solutions to improve system reliability, operational efficiency, and grid performance.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, IT, vendors, and distributed energy resource partners to support automation infrastructure and communications systems.
- Monitor system performance, investigate abnormal events, analyze operational data, and implement corrective actions to enhance reliability and functionality.
- Develop and maintain system documentation, configurations, protocols, and user training while providing on-call technical support for critical operational issues.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, or a related technical field.
- One or more years of experience working with large-scale control, automation, SCADA, or distribution management systems in a utility or industrial environment.
- Strong knowledge of communication systems, networking concepts, and automation technologies.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot technical and operational issues.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across departments and explain technical concepts clearly.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
Qualifications
- Current & Valid MN Drivers License.
Nice to Have
- Power systems emphasis or experience in electric utility operations.
- Experience with Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS), SCADA systems, RTUs, or intelligent electronic devices (IEDs).
- Knowledge of GIS, OMS, AMI/AMR, or related utility enterprise applications.
- Experience with distribution automation, voltage reduction, load control, or power factor correction programs.
- Familiarity with utility communication protocols and smart grid technologies.
- Experience supporting grid-scale distributed energy resource (DER) projects.
Pay
The anticipated hiring range for this position is between $88,900 to $116,655 annually. The final compensation offered is based on the candidate’s experience and skill level. In addition, this position is eligible for an annual bonus with a target payout of 8% of annual earnings based on company performance.
