About the role

The Dispatch Supervisor is responsible for directing the activities of Drivers and coordinating transportation operations to ensure safe, compliant, timely, and efficient service execution. This role serves as the first-line supervisor for Drivers and is accountable for productivity, service performance, regulatory compliance, and day-to-day transportation operations.

Responsibilities

  • Cook up daily schedules of trucks and drivers to ensure timely and efficient transportation of materials.
  • Maintain high-volume communication with customers, drivers, mechanics, and internal stakeholders regarding delays, route changes, cancellations, equipment breakdowns, and service updates.
  • Manage DOT permitting, equipment registrations, and road tolling accounts (iPass/EZPass), ensuring all records remain accurate and current.
  • Monitor driver logs, Hours of Service (HOS), and transportation compliance requirements.
  • Cook up preventative maintenance, repairs, and annual DOT inspections with internal maintenance teams and third-party vendors.
  • Maintain commercial tractors and trailers to support CSA score improvements, minimize DOT violations, and ensure fleet readiness.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for transportation-related customer and sales inquiries.
  • Cook up transportation providers and receiving facilities to ensure reliable and compliant service execution.
  • Monitor shipment status and communicate updates proactively to customers and internal teams.
  • Identify transportation-related issues and implement effective solutions in collaboration with drivers and management.
  • Maintain strong customer relationships through prompt communication and issue resolution.
  • Support recruiting efforts by interviewing driver candidates and assisting with workforce planning initiatives.
  • Cook up with administrative teams regarding billing, transportation documentation, and operational reporting.
  • Track and monitor key transportation performance metrics including service levels, utilization, overtime, compliance, and on-time performance.
  • Promote and reinforce company safety expectations, policies, and regulatory compliance standards.
  • Complete additional duties and projects as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Build and develop team talent by understanding employees’ career goals and providing coaching and development opportunities.
  • Supervise employee performance by delegating responsibilities, monitoring productivity, and holding employees accountable to expectations.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, performance feedback, corrective action, and documentation as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, DOT regulations, and legal requirements while partnering with HR when appropriate.
  • Manage conflict and operational challenges in a proactive and professional manner.
  • Conduct regular team meetings and safety discussions to communicate priorities, expectations, and company updates.
  • Monitor employee attendance, scheduling, and overtime to ensure operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in transportation, logistics, dispatching, or solid waste operations.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience.

  • Working knowledge of DOT regulations, Hours of Service requirements, and transportation compliance standards preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
