About the Role

We are seeking a Disability Adjudicator III in the Medical Relations Branch to provide consultation services to Social Security Administration disability adjudicators and professional adjudication for disability applicants. This position is federally funded and time-limited (FFTL), meaning it is paid entirely through a federal grant. The duration of employment will not exceed the life of the grant. Employees in FFTL positions are unclassified (non-merit) but receive benefits at the same level as classified (merit) employees in permanent positions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert-level advice and consultation to less experienced adjudicators on complex disability claims.
  • Respond to questions regarding development and documentation of disability claims.
  • Adjudicate all levels of disability claims and special workloads.
  • Request, obtain, and evaluate medical and vocational evidence, and prepare written decisions.
  • Assist supervisors in identifying and resolving caseload problems, recommending procedural changes, and performing consultative exams or other reviews.
  • Serve as a field office point of contact and/or participate in workgroups.
  • Answer inquiries from claimants, representatives, Social Security offices, and others requesting claims information.
  • Attend trainings and meetings as required.
  • Safeguard confidential and sensitive information, complete required trainings, and adhere to all policies and statutes related to information security.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience, Training, or Skills: Three years of experience adjudicating Social Security Administration disability claims.

Substitution Options:

  • Experience adjudicating Social Security Administration disability claims or administrative experience within an adjudicating organization may substitute for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • Current or prior military experience may substitute for the required college education on a year-for-year basis.

Working Conditions

  • Work is typically performed in an office setting.
  • Frequent travel may be required for conducting hearings and professional relations; occasional travel may be required for other functions.

Pay

Salary range: $3,840.90 - $5,761.44 per month (Pay Grade 14).

Benefits

Eligible for benefits at the same level as classified (merit) employees in permanent positions.

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months.
