Director, Underwriting/Pricing
The Director, Underwriting/Pricing role is a senior actuarial and underwriting leadership position focusing on developing, refining, and overseeing pricing models that support new product development, renewals, and ongoing customer programs. Key responsibilities include:
Leading underwriting and pricing strategy development
Ensuring accurate financial modeling and consistent application of actuarial and underwriting principles across products and programs
Developing, documenting, and maintaining underwriting methodologies, pricing models, and analytical frameworks for new and existing products
Analyzing utilization trends, claims data, and cost assumptions to ensure accuracy and reliability in financial modeling
Evaluating financial and risk impact of new product initiatives and providing recommendations to senior leadership
Overseeing underwriting processes in collaboration with internal teams to ensure consistency, timeliness, and compliance with standards
Supporting RFPs, renewals, and client proposals by analyzing large and complex datasets from multiple sources
Partnering with sales, marketing, finance, and product teams to align pricing strategies with business objectives
Providing executive-level insights, reports, and recommendations to support strategic decision-making
Interacting with clients and internal stakeholders to resolve pricing, proposal, and data-related issues
Requirements
Strong actuarial expertise, advanced analytical capability, and experience in underwriting and pricing within a managed care or healthcare environment
Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Finance, or related field (Master’s preferred)
ASA or FSA certification required
Deep understanding of cost modeling, utilization analysis, and claims data interpretation
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience handling large datasets using analytical tools (e.g., Access or similar)
Strong problem-solving and quantitative analysis skills with attention to financial accuracy and risk assessment
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to present complex analyses to executive audiences
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage deadlines and multiple priorities independently
Ability to work cross-functionally and influence stakeholders across technical and non-technical teams
Self-starter mindset with adaptability to evolving products and business needs
