About the Role
As the Director of Underwriting, you will influence the company’s underwriting strategies, business plans, and ensure consistent execution of our underwriting principles and standards. You will develop the Underwriting staff to empower them to deliver results in a professional, efficient, and effective manner aligned with business goals. You will also contribute to strategic planning for the department.
Responsibilities
- Oversee profitability, pricing, risk selection, risk appetite, renewal retention, and compliance.
- Establish and monitor underwriting guidelines, SOX compliance, and underwriting staff authority.
- Manage expense control and conduct underwriting book, state, and industry analysis.
- Ensure compliance with filings, regulatory requirements, internal standards, and internal audit requirements.
- Conduct market analysis and trend evaluations to summarize underwriting activities, market conditions, and strategic planning insights.
- Assist in action plans around strategic goals.
- Underwrite, maintain, and grow a profitable book of business, including developing and executing pricing targets.
- Serve as a “go-to person” for other departments and a conduit for communication across teams.
- Create and maintain relationships with distribution partners.
- Facilitate feedback from staff to senior leadership.
- Collaborate with internal teams to deliver an excellent customer experience for distribution partners and insureds.
- Foster an environment of learning and accountability, including developing direct reports and skip-level staff.
- Work alongside Regional Underwriting to assess market feedback and develop action plans.
- Provide timely coaching and feedback to drive individual and team performance.
- Assess talent, identify development and training needs, and collaborate with HR and leadership to create development plans.
- Execute talent management strategies to improve engagement, job satisfaction, and psychological safety.
- Analyze and evaluate portfolio metrics, communicate results to executive teams, and suggest data-driven changes.
- Assist in the creation and execution of annual department budgets.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience underwriting workers compensation risks up to $750,000.
- Experience in supervision, mentoring, and development of underwriting teams preferred.
- Knowledge of workers compensation ratemaking principles to effectively utilize actuarial resources.
- Excellent analytic, communication, and negotiation skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Power BI, and other data analytical tools.
- Strong active listening, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills for team and client relationships.
- Strong business acumen to understand performance metrics and develop profitable growth strategies.
- Ability to influence, work independently, and collaborate in a team environment.
- Independent thinker with a forward-thinking mindset.
Travel Requirements
Low to moderate level of domestic U.S. travel (up to 10% - 20% of time).
