Director, Strategic Events
About the role
This is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategy, governance, and execution of MongoDB’s global strategic events portfolio. Reporting to the Vice President of Corporate Marketing, this leader will operate with significant autonomy, influence across functions, and engage regularly with executive stakeholders. The role can be based out of any MongoDB U.S. office or remotely within the United States.
Responsibilities
- Define the sponsorship and partner event strategy, including MongoDB’s approach to sponsorship packages, exhibitor programs, and partner activations across flagship and third-party events in close partnership with Partner Marketing.
- Lead and develop a global team: manage, coach, and grow a high-performing, globally distributed events team by establishing clear priorities, operating rhythms, accountability, and consistent standards of excellence across regions and time zones.
- Build with AI: bring an AI-native approach to how the function operates by using AI tools and agents to improve workflows, automate reporting, increase team capacity, and personalize attendee journeys. Set the expectation that the team will do the same.
- Represent Strategic Events across the business by partnering with leaders across Marketing, Sales, Product, Partner, and Communications. Represent the function in senior planning forums and ensure every program directly supports MongoDB’s company and go-to-market priorities. Expect to travel ~40% of the time to support events.
- Shape the global strategic events vision and portfolio by setting the strategy, priorities, and tiering framework for MongoDB’s flagship user conferences, executive summits, global roadshows, sales kickoff, and top-tier third-party conferences. Decide where MongoDB should show up, increase investment, or step back based on business impact and audience value.
- Drive pipeline and revenue impact by partnering closely with Revenue Marketing and Sales to build integrated pre-event, onsite, and post-event programs that turn engagement into qualified pipeline and measurable business outcomes. Own the Strategic Events contribution to that shared pipeline motion.
- Set the experiential and creative vision by creating differentiated, audience-centered experiences for developers, technical leaders, business decision-makers, customers, partners, and executives. Shape the messaging and narrative that bring MongoDB's product vision and AI-era story to life across live experiences, content, and communications.
- Own the budget, vendor model, and event infrastructure by managing a multi-million-dollar Strategic Events budget, including forecasting, allocation, and ROI. Oversee the global agency and production model, along with the event technology and data stack that supports registration, lead capture, CRM integration, measurement, and attribution.
Qualifications
- 12+ years of experience leading global B2B events in enterprise technology or SaaS, including proprietary flagship conferences, executive programs, and complex event portfolios. A track record of scaling programs alongside company growth.
- Strong executive presence and influence with a track record of partnering with C-level stakeholders and cross-functional leaders and driving alignment in a matrixed organization.
- Experience leading global, distributed teams, including senior individual contributors and people leaders. Ability to set clear priorities, build strong operating rhythms, and develop high-performing teams across regions and time zones.
- Demonstrated understanding of how AI drives business value. Champion AI adoption, encourage AI-forward thinking within your team, and partner effectively with technical stakeholders building AI/agent-based systems. Hands-on experience building these systems is a plus but not required. Familiarity with AI chat tools alone is not sufficient.
- Deep operational and financial experience, including managing multi-million-dollar budgets, global agencies and production partners, complex vendor ecosystems, and high-stakes negotiations.
- Proven accountability for pipeline and revenue impact. Experience partnering closely with Revenue Marketing and Sales and fluency in pipeline attribution, revenue influence, ROI measurement, and event performance reporting.
- Experience designing events for technical or developer audiences is a plus.
